Public Speaking & Debate Teacher –

Full-Time Location:

Newton, MA (In-Person) Lumos Debate is looking for a full-time public speaking and debate instructor to join our year-round in-person team. We work with bright, motivated students in grades 4-10, helping them grow into confident, articulate speakers. As a Lumos coach, you’ll play a key role in building students’ communication, critical thinking, and leadership skills in a warm, supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities:

What You’ll Do Teach small-group classes in public forum debate during weekday afternoons Build long-term relationships with students and help them grow as speakers and thinkers Guide students in speechwriting, case prep, rebuttal structure, and delivery skills Coach students preparing for local tournaments in Public Forum debate Collaborate with other instructors and curriculum staff to improve lesson plans and student experience Help run/organize bi-monthly tournaments Occasionally help with events like info sessions or parent open houses

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in any field. Experience in either teaching or competing in debate (Public Forum, Lincoln Douglas, Parliamentary, Policy Debate formats). We teach mostly Public Forum debate. Strong communication and organizational skills. Commitment to working with elementary and middle school students, with the ability to adapt teaching methods for different age groups and learning styles.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

Prior teaching experience, particularly in debate, public speaking, or a related field. Experience working with competitive debate teams at the middle or high school level.
