POSITION OVERVIEW

Elementary ESOL Teacher•Talbot Community School, 25-26 SY
Portland Public Schools seeks an energetic, creative, master teacher of Multilingual Learners (MLs) at Talbot Community School for the 2025-2026 school year and beyond. In Portland, ESOL teachers:
provide and support rigorous and appropriate instruction aligned with the WIDA English Language Proficiency Standards and the Common Core to meet grade level expectations for MLs including newcomers;
collaborate and consult with general education teachers to enhance acquisition of English in all language domains necessary to participate and make progress in general education content classes;
provide on-going staff development as necessary on language acquisition and acculturation, sheltered instruction, and effective practices in teaching MLs; and
use school and student level data to inform instruction and programming supports for MLs.
A successful candidate will also have:
extensive knowledge and experience with the cultures and languages of our students and families;
excellent interpersonal skills in order to collaborate effectively with all general education teachers and other educational support staff;
the ability to provide ongoing staff development and leadership as a specialist of language development; and
expertise in building relationships with multilingual families.

ABOUT TALBOT

Gerald E. Talbot Community School is a Pre-K through Grade 5 school located off outer Forest Avenue in Portland, Maine. Our school is named in honor of Gerald E. Talbot, who is one of Portland’s most cherished and respected community leaders. He is an educator, author, historian, military veteran, civil and human rights activist, founding President of the Portland branch of the NAACP, and is the first African American to be elected to Maine’s Legislature and to chair the Maine State Board of Education. His accomplishments include the successful passage of the Maine Fair Housing Bill, the Maine Human Rights Act, and the establishment of the Maine Human Rights Commission.
We are proud of our diverse population of learners from around the world, who speak a total of eleven different languages. Our school is in a community building which also houses a branch of the Portland Public Library, a Greater Portland Health dental office, and space for the Recreation Department of Portland Parks and Recreation, including a community swimming pool. Our grounds include tennis courts, a basketball court, an accessible playscape for children of all abilities, and multiple ball fields.
