Full-time, Monday – Friday (43 week school year, late-August through mid-June)

Compensation/Salary:
  • Competitive salary based on qualifications and experience.
  • Opportunities for additional compensation: o Participation in evening enrichment programs and other school-sponsored activities during the academic year that fall outside the scope of regular full-time teaching duties.

o Optional Senior Summer Camp Counselor position available during the summer months.

Work Hours:

Elementary teachers at Mousam River STEM Academy are classified as salaried exempt employees and are therefore not eligible for overtime pay. This classification reflects the professional nature of the role and the expectation that responsibilities may extend beyond instructional time. The standard full-time schedule for this position is 8 hours per day, Monday through Friday, typically from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., which includes a 30-minute unpaid lunch break.

Teachers are expected to:

Provide classroom instruction and supervision during the academic day Complete lesson planning, grading, and student support as needed Participate in meetings, family communication, and school events While the role is based on a 40-hour work week, some variation may occur due to school programming, special events, or professional responsibilities.

Job Overview:

Mousam River STEM Academy is seeking a passionate and dedicated Elementary School Teacher to join our team for the academic year, running from mid-August through mid-June. This position offers the opportunity to lead engaging, hands-on, STEM-focused learning experiences for elementary-aged students. The teacher will be responsible for fostering a safe, inclusive classroom environment that supports academic growth, critical thinking, and social-emotional development. This role is ideal for a self-motivated educator who thrives in a collaborative, innovative setting and is excited about inspiring curiosity and a love of learning in young students.

Key Responsibilities:
    Multi-Age Classroom & Differentiated Instruction:

    Our elementary program is structured as a multi-age classroom, bringing together students of different ages and grade levels in a shared learning environment. The teacher will be expected to differentiate instruction to meet the diverse academic needs, developmental levels, and learning styles of all students. This includes developing flexible lesson plans, creating leveled assignments, and using small group instruction to ensure all students are appropriately challenged and supported. Strong organizational skills, creativity, and the ability to manage multiple instructional tracks simultaneously are essential.

    Curriculum Development & Implementation:

    Design and deliver a creative, STEM-integrated curriculum that builds on students’ foundational skills and promotes curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Plan and lead grade-level appropriate, hands-on learning experiences that support students’ academic, social-emotional, and physical development across all core subjects.

    Classroom Management:

    Create a nurturing, organized, and safe classroom environment that encourages exploration and learning. Manage classroom routines and transitions, ensuring that children understand and follow behavioral expectations.

    Individualized Support:

    Assess each child’s individual development and learning progress. Tailor activities and provide personalized support as needed to meet each child’s unique needs, fostering their growth and confidence.

    Safety & Well-Being:

    Ensure the safety and well-being of all children at all times. Supervise children closely, especially during outdoor activities near natural features such as a pond, stream, or river, ensuring safety protocols are strictly followed.

    Outdoor Activities & Physical Engagement:

    Actively engage students in daily outdoor play and structured physical activities that promote movement, coordination, teamwork, and healthy habits. Supervise and participate in activities that may involve running, climbing, and other forms of physical exertion appropriate for elementary-age children. Field Trips Drive children to local educational and fun field trips using the school’s 15-passenger van. The teacher will ensure safety during transportation and while on trips. These trips will be local and will not require overnight stays. Additional parent chaperones will be invited. Collaboration & Communication with

    Families:

    Maintain open, positive communication with parents and families regarding each child’s progress and well-being. Conduct parent-teacher conferences and share regular updates about classroom activities and development.

    Professional Development:

    Stay current on best practices in elementary education, STEM instruction, and child development. Participate in ongoing training, workshops, and professional development opportunities to enhance instructional strategies, classroom management skills, and overall teaching effectiveness.

    Compliance:

    Ensure that the classroom environment complies with all health & safety regulations and state guidelines. Keep accurate records for children’s attendance, health, and developmental milestones.

    Qualifications:
    Education:

    Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, Secondary Education, a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics), or a closely related area.

    Experience:

    At least 3 years of experience working with children in any age group. Strong interest or background in STEM education is highly valued.

    Skills & Abilities:
    • Strong understanding of elementary child development and age-appropriate teaching practices.
    • Ability to design and implement engaging, hands-on STEM and interdisciplinary learning activities that promote curiosity, collaboration, and problem-solving.
    • Effective classroom management skills that support a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to foster strong relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and take initiative in lesson planning and classroom leadership.
    • Passion for working with elementary-aged children and a commitment to creating a stimulating and joyful learning experience.
    Certifications:

    Current CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain prior to start date). Maine criminal background check (required).

    Driver’s License:

    Clean driver’s license required.

    Physical Requirements:

    Ability to stand, sit on the floor, and move around the classroom for extended periods of time. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds (e.g., assisting children with personal belongings or activities). Ability to assist children with physical activities that may involve running, climbing, or other types of movement. Ability to spend extended periods of time outdoors in all weather conditions year-round—including cold, heat, and rain—participating in outdoor activities and supervision during play. Ability to actively engage with children in physical activities that support motor development and coordination.

    Work Environment:

    The elementary school teacher will work in a dynamic classroom setting, both indoors and outdoors. The position requires active supervision of children, including outdoor activities near natural water features (pond, stream, river), with a focus on ensuring safety in these environments. The role requires the ability to manage multiple responsibilities, often working independently without assistance from other teaching staff.
