Job Description

Elementary Classroom Teacher for Nature-Based School Lupine Community School Chapel Hill, NC 27516 Join a passionate team of educators in the recent expansion of the Lupine Community School! We are a non-profit, nature based, inclusive farm school welcoming students from preschool through 2nd grade. We are seeking Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade teachers to join us in creating an educational experience full of wonder, focused on outdoor learning, incorporating humane education, and emphasizing social-emotional skill development, all while meeting the standards for NC elementary education. The ideal candidates will have the combined personal qualities and experience needed to help us continue carrying forth the vision and tenets of the original Lupine School, in place since its founding year.

Familiarity with NC’s essential standards Willingness to be creative and flexible as an educator and team member to meet the unique and individual needs of our students Seeing the role of educator as one of a facilitator and co-investigator A love and appreciation for outside learning, in all kinds of weather An ability to maintain a calm nurturing presence for students A willingness to help create a new learning space during our inaugural year Proficiency working with special needs students and IEP, including neurodiverse learners A familiarity with teaching philosophies which emphasize “following the child” and using curriculum as a framework Experience working in settings using “emergent” curriculums Interested and open to project-based learning Ability to maintain the classroom environment using kind and nurturing methods, seeing children as capable, and being able to successfully promote mutual respect among and between students Comfort/skill using gentle methods to focus on social emotional learning Ability to introduce and regularly integrate concepts related to a “community mindset” as part of the classroom environment Demonstrated experience working with co-teachers in a non-hierarchical, cohesive team environment emphasizing collaboration and a shared vision for the classroom A familiarity with the unique aspects of teaching in a mixed-age classroom Requirements Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field; certification in elementary teaching is preferred. Experience in classroom management and curriculum development is highly desirable. Knowledge of childhood development principles and child welfare practices. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to engage effectively with students, parents, and colleagues. A genuine passion for teaching and commitment to fostering a love of learning in young children.
