GWCS serves children primarily in the Roxborough, Manayunk, East Falls, and Germantown neighborhoods of Philadelphia.
Position Summary:
The Elementary Teacher role creates and administers a classroom program that is conducive to student learning and development. The Elementary Teacher uses a variety of classroom techniques for learning and implements interdisciplinary activities, field trips, outdoor experiences, educational technologies, and collaborative work with other teachers in grade bands. The ideal Elementary Teacher is flexible and committed to a continuous process for professional growth. Teachers report to the Director of Teaching.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Promote high expectations, demonstrates a caring attitude, and establishes an environment that supports social, emotional, and academic development in students
- Supervise students within the science classroom and other assigned areas
- Develop lesson plans and deliver group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines
- Collaborate with other teachers, other professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues
- Respond to a wide range of inquiries from students’ parents or guardians regarding instructional programs and student progress
- Frequently communicate with parents and caregivers about their child’s progress by phone, email, in conferences, newsletters, and through report cards. Be available for individual meetings when needed
- Maintain a classroom website for students, parents, and stakeholders
- Evaluate the progress of each student through formal and informal assessment
- Use positive and productive techniques for improving student behavior
- Additional duties as assigned

Education and Experience :
- BA or BS in Elementary Education, or a related field
- Bachelor’s degree required with a record of personal, professional, and/or academic achievement
- Teacher certification- completed or in process
- Demonstrated expertise in subject area
Physical Requirements:
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required such as:
- Functioning in classroom space – walking, sitting, standing, reaching
- Must be able to sit for up to two hours looking at a computer monitor, using a keyboard/mouse and typing
- Must be able to stand for up to two hours instructing a classroom of learners
- Functioning in outdoor space
