COLLETON COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT JOB DESCRIPTION – GIFTED AND TALENTED TEACHER JOB PURPOSE
Under occasional supervision, the Gifted and Talented Teacher performs specialized work in instructing and nurturing the academic growth of gifted students in assigned elementary classrooms. This role is integral in creating a challenging and enriching educational environment that meets the unique needs of students identified as gifted and talented. The teacher reports to the assigned school principal.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Instructing Gifted Students :
Meets and instructs assigned gifted students in locations and at times designated, ensuring that the instructional content is differentiated to accommodate their advanced learning needs.
Curriculum Planning :
Develops a program of study designed to engage, challenge, and extend the academic abilities of gifted students. The teacher tailors instruction to meet the individual needs, interests, and abilities of gifted learners. Creating a
Conducive Learning Environment :
Designs and maintains a classroom environment that fosters creativity, critical thinking, and independent learning. Ensures that the learning environment is stimulating, appropriate to the students’ maturity levels, and supports differentiated learning experiences.
Instructional Design :
Prepares comprehensive lesson plans and instructional materials that reflect the depth and complexity appropriate for gifted learners. Demonstrates flexibility in adjusting lessons to meet the diverse needs of students.
Behavior Management :
Encourages and enforces appropriate classroom behavior, guiding gifted students to set and maintain high standards of self-regulation and responsibility.
Differentiation and Enrichment :
Implements strategies to differentiate instruction by providing enrichment opportunities, advanced learning activities, and project-based experiences that extend the core curriculum for gifted students.
Goal-Oriented Instruction :
Guides the learning process toward the achievement of rigorous academic goals, and establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects. Communicates these objectives effectively to students, promoting higher-order thinking and problem-solving.
Assessment and Evaluation :
Regularly assesses student progress through a variety of formal and informal assessments, providing feedback that supports further intellectual and creative growth. Keeps accurate records of student achievement and shares progress reports with parents and administrators.
Identifying and Supporting Gifted Learners :
Works closely with school counselors, administrators, and specialists to identify students who are eligible for gifted education programs. Monitors and supports the ongoing development of gifted students’ academic needs and social-emotional well-being.
Professional Development :
Actively seeks professional development opportunities to stay current with research, teaching strategies, and best practices in gifted education, including attending workshops, conferences, and in-service training.
Collaboration :
Works collaboratively with other teachers, specialists, and administrators to create and implement an inclusive and challenging curriculum. Shares expertise in differentiation and enrichment with colleagues and participates in school-wide initiatives related to gifted education. Communication with
Parents and Community :
Communicates regularly with parents to inform them of their child’s progress, successes, and areas for growth. Provides guidance on how parents can support their child’s academic and personal development at home.
Classroom Management and Safety :
Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Develops and maintains a positive classroom atmosphere where gifted students feel supported in their learning.
Administrative and Organizational Responsibilities :
Maintains accurate, complete, and up-to-date records as required by district policies and state regulations. Assists in implementing policies and procedures that govern student behavior and classroom management.
Other Duties :
Performs additional duties related to the role as required by the principal, including participating in staff meetings, school events, and district committees.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Valid South Carolina teaching certificate with endorsement in Gifted and Talented Education or eligibility to obtain such certification. Certification in Gifted Education or completion of the South Carolina Gifted Education endorsement program within the first year of employment is preferred. Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
