Teacher – 8th Grade English Language Arts Kestrel Heights Charter School 4700 South Alston Avenue, Durham, NC 27713 Teacher – Middle School Kestrel Heights is a small, diverse, and inclusive learning community in Durham that empowers our Scholars to sharpen academic knowledge, demonstrate creative expression, and expand leadership abilities to prepare for success in high school, college, and beyond.
SUMMARY:
The teacher is expected to plan, organize, and present instruction in a structured and positive learning environment to help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development. The teacher will assess student academic learning and communicate student progress with parents frequently.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
Teach the assigned roster daily as indicated on the schedule Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities using the NC Standard Course of Study Integrate small-group and blended learning opportunities for students in your classes Regularly partner with colleagues and school leadership to review, analyze, and make appropriately responsive plans to student achievement data to strengthen the school’s Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) Prepare the classroom for class activities. Provide a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities Observe and evaluate students’ performance and development, assign and grade class work, homework, tests, and assignments in a timely fashion, and provide appropriate feedback on student work Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by law, district policies, and school regulations Prepare required reports on students and activities Manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing clear expectations and procedures Maintain student discipline in accordance with the rules and disciplinary systems of the school Engage with colleagues to provide student support, counsel students with academic and/or social concerns, and provide student encouragement Participate in extracurricular activities such as social activities, sporting activities, clubs, and student organizations Participate in department meetings, school meetings, and parent meetings Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues, and parents regarding student progress, student needs, and school needs Keep updated with developments in the subject area, teaching resources, and methods and make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities Attend school and district staff development, including online training and after-school staff meetings Other Duties and Responsibilities The incumbent must be punctual and prepared at the start of each school day, and at the beginning of each class or duty assignment. The KHS school day begins at 7:15 a.m. and runs through 3:30 p.m. for teachers. Serve on faculty committees Complete non-instructional duties (ie: recess monitoring, etc.) as assigned Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; communicate well with school personnel Effectively integrate electronic resources (computers and all aspects of the Microsoft Office Professional and Google Suite software) into classroom instruction and communication with stakeholders Establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments Comply with confidentiality requirements in local, state, and federal policies and statutes Physical ability (able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally) and dexterity to perform the duties and responsibilities of the job Perform other duties and responsibilities as requested by the Executive Director, building director and/or other members of the KHS Administration team
