Position Purpose:

ESL teachers instruct students whose first language is not English. The goal is to teach the NC English Language Development Standard Course of Study. ESL teachers instruct Multilingual Learners to read, speak, listen, and write English, so they can achieve grade-level proficiency in all academic areas. ESL teachers must be highly knowledgeable in the content and structure of the English language as well as the methodology for teaching English to non-native speakers.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of various methods of teaching English to non-native speakers
Knowledge of laws concerning Title III
Extensive knowledge of OCS curriculum and techniques for integrating curriculum and OCS policies and effective instructional practices Thorough understanding of the teaching and learning process in grades K-12
Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education
Ability to infuse technology into the curriculum
Ability to constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students, particularly when a student is participating in an inclusive activity
Ability to motivate and inspire students
Ability to maintain a clean and orderly environment
Ability to perform general clerical duties
Ability to maintain order and discipline in a classroom and their school environments
Ability to operate common office machines
Ability to maintain basic files and records
Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, school-based staff, students, parents, and the community
Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in an applicable field for applicable level(s)
If transferring from a teaching position from another school system in or out of state, must have received routine meets standards or above standard evaluations with no action plans for improvement
Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

Must hold a valid Teacher’s License issued by the state of NC in the applicable field and for the level assigned.
Must not be on the NCDPI list of teachers no longer qualified to teach and/or must not be currently engaged in a certification revocation hearing process
Must possess a valid driver’s license issued by the

NC Department of Motor Vehicles Preferred Qualifications:

National Board Certification
Demonstrated record of achieving Highly Qualified status on evaluations

Spanish Speaking ML Teacher Duties and Responsibilities:

Teaches a full load of classes just like the mainstream teacher. He/she may have classes that are a combination of pull-out and co-teaching.
Creates a classroom environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to achieve learning objectives.
Collaborates with teachers to check student progress, teach the

as well as help student/mainstream teachers with strategies for building academic language in the content areas. Administers standardized test administrations in accordance with all applicable Code of Ethics, Testing Code of Ethics, NCDPI, and/or national standards and regulations. This includes WIDA Screener (to determine initial ML placement) and ACCESS for ELLs (annual English Language Proficiency assessment).

Teacher Duties and Responsibilities:

Plan, organize, and provide instruction in English that meet state and federal standards
Provide instruction that is consistent and coordinated with the district’s/school’s instructional program to ensure that students meet and exceed learning targets
Develop and deliver lesson plans that utilize a broad range of appropriate teaching techniques and strategies
Address all aspects of communication through appropriate instruction that develops each student’s ability to read, write, speak, and listen in the appropriate content area
Administer academic and language assessments to evaluate student progress in meeting academic learning targets and progress in language acquisition
Maintain complete and accurate records of student progress and evidence of growth and progress
Provide a nurturing and supportive learning environment that encourages student responsibility and incorporates challenging instructional strategies
Assist with the administration of implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct and, for the classroom, develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner
Adapt curriculum to provide individual, small group, and/or remedial instruction to meet the needs of individual students and subgroups of students
Establish and maintain standards of student behavior required to run an orderly and productive classroom environment
Employ a variety of instructional techniques and strategies to meet different aptitudes and interests of students
Manage allotted learning time to maximize student achievement
Oversee assigned out-of-classroom activities during the school day, as needed
Appraise your effectiveness and demonstrate successful application of skills and information acquired to increase effectiveness
Strive to maintain and improve professional competence
Participate in school management and share responsibilities for the total school program
Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees as required Administer and supervise standardized test administrations all applicable Code of Ethics, Testing Code of Ethics, NCDPI, and/or national standards and regulations
Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal

WORKING CONDITIONS

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work is considered light physical work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force. Substantial amount of time spent standing and/or walking.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Employees in this position are required to work in indoor and outdoor environments and come into direct contact with OCS staff, students, and the public.
