Job Description UncommonHigh School English Language Arts (ELA) teachers are passionateabout literature and building an engaging, rigorous classroomculture focusing on helping all students prepare for college. Ourteachers become experts in their course content, and have a keensense of how to motivate and inspire high school students. At theheart of our English classes is an emphasis on reading andstudent-led discourse. Teachers use a variety of instructionalstrategies to prioritize discussion, ignite a passion forliterature, and promote strong voice and agency within students. Atthe conclusion of each high school year students are more preparedfor the academic rigor and independence of college coursework, aswell as for a long term love of literacy. Responsibilities 1.Instruction
- You’ll teach from a robust literature curriculumshared across our high schools that prioritizes inclusive texts,emphasizes diversity, and prepares students for Advanced Placement(AP), SAT and collegiate level coursework.
- You’ll conduct a deepexploration of daily content in order to guide students to analyzebooks by authors like James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, F. ScottFitzgerald, William Shakespeare, and Yaa Gyasi; books that ignite apassion for literature, sharpen a critical eye for examining theworld, and deepen students’ intellectual identity.
- You’ll developstudents’ independent and collaborative reading, writing, anddiscussion skills.
- You’ll facilitate student-led discourse,teaching students to use evidence to make sophisticated claims, andto synthesize and evaluate arguments and rhetoric.
- You’ll analyzestudent comprehension and writing regularly and determine how toadapt and write your own lessons to maximize student learning.
- You’ll partner with your department and your grade level team oncontent and instructional strategies that support your students andhelp all students succeed. 2. Data Analysis
- You’ll meet weeklywith your principal and/or instructional coach to analyze andrespond to trends in student work samples and assessments.
- You’lllearn and implement strategies to differentiate instruction for alllearners in your classroom. 3. School Culture
- You’ll buildpositive relationships with students to ensure they feel seen,loved, and heard.
- You’ll partner with students’ families toensure appropriate resources are available to support their child’slearning needs.
- You’ll engage in practice-based professionaldevelopment, mentorship, and coaching sessions.
- You’llparticipate in weekly, school-wide meetings to cultivate community,model our core values, and encourage student achievement.
- You’llpartner with your grade level team to develop academic goals andpractice instructional strategies. Qualifications

Required Experience:
- Ademonstrated interest in impacting K-12 students in urban schoolsand communities (1-2 years experience preferred).
- Academicexpertise in Humanities, English, Social Sciences, or other relatedfields of study.
- Prior to the start of employment, you must havea bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Teacher certification is not a prerequisite for consideration atUncommon Schools in the state of NJ, but you do need to meet NJstate certification eligibility requirements (a final undergraduateor graduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 for graduates on or after 9/1/16,or 2.75 if you graduated prior to 9/1/16). All instructional staffare required to become certified in the state of New Jersey withina reasonable period after beginning employment. AdditionalInformation Our people are what make us Uncommon. Our compensation philosophy values equity & fairness andattracting & retaining top talent. Compensation Compensation forthis role is between $56,000 to $80,000. Starting pay is determinedusing various factors including but not limited to relevantfull-time teaching experience, education certifications, and tenurewith Uncommon Schools. Candidates without full-time Teachingexperience will likely have a starting salary of $56,000. Benefits
