Job Description UncommonHigh School English Language Arts (ELA) teachers are passionateabout literature and building an engaging, rigorous classroomculture focusing on helping all students prepare for college. Ourteachers become experts in their course content, and have a keensense of how to motivate and inspire high school students. At theheart of our English classes is an emphasis on reading andstudent-led discourse. Teachers use a variety of instructionalstrategies to prioritize discussion, ignite a passion forliterature, and promote strong voice and agency within students. Atthe conclusion of each high school year students are more preparedfor the academic rigor and independence of college coursework, aswell as for a long term love of literacy. Responsibilities 1.Instruction You’ll teach from a robust literature curriculum sharedacross our high schools that prioritizes inclusive texts,emphasizes diversity, and prepares students for Advanced Placement(AP), SAT and collegiate level coursework. You’ll conduct a deepexploration of daily content in order to guide students to analyzebooks by authors like James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, F. ScottFitzgerald, William Shakespeare, and Yaa Gyasi; books that ignite apassion for literature, sharpen a critical eye for examining theworld, and deepen students’ intellectual identity. You’ll developstudents’ independent and collaborative reading, writing, anddiscussion skills. You’ll facilitate student-led discourse,teaching students to use evidence to make sophisticated claims, andto synthesize and evaluate arguments and rhetoric. You’ll analyzestudent comprehension and writing regularly and determine how toadapt and write your own lessons to maximize student learning.
You’ll partner with your department and your grade level team oncontent and instructional strategies that support your students andhelp all students succeed. 2. Data Analysis You’ll meet weekly withyour principal and/or instructional coach to analyze and respond totrends in student work samples and assessments. You’ll learn andimplement strategies to differentiate instruction for all learnersin your classroom. 3. School Culture You’ll build positiverelationships with students to ensure they feel seen, loved, andheard. You’ll partner with students’ families to ensure appropriateresources are available to support their child’s learning needs.
You’ll engage in practice-based professional development,mentorship, and coaching sessions. You’ll participate in weekly,school-wide meetings to cultivate community, model our core values,and encourage student achievement. You’ll partner with your gradelevel team to develop academic goals and practice instructionalstrategies. Required Experience:
A demonstrated interest in impacting K-12students in urban schools and communities (1-2 years experiencepreferred). Academic expertise in Humanities, English, SocialSciences, or other related fields of study. Prior to the start ofemployment, you must have a bachelor’s degree from an accreditedcollege or university. Certification is not required to be hired atUncommon, but you do need to meet NY state certificationeligibility requirements. To meet these requirements, you mustenroll in a teacher preparation program and maintain a GPA of 2.5or higher during your employment with us if you do not have adegree in education. Uncommon Schools teachers are required tobecome certified in the state of New York within a reasonableperiod after beginning employment. Additional Information Ourpeople are what make us Uncommon. Ourcompensation philosophy values equity & fairness and attracting &retaining top talent. Compensation Compensation for this role isbetween $50,000 to $64,700. Starting pay is determined usingvarious factors including but not limited to relevant full-timeteaching experience, education certifications, and tenure withUncommon Schools. Candidates without full-time Teaching experiencewill likely have a starting salary of $50,000.
