Job Description

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

English Faculty Mount Vernon Nazarene University exists to shape lives through educating the whole person and cultivating Christ-likeness for lifelong learning and service. Mount Vernon Nazarene University (MVNU) is an intentionally Christian teaching university for traditional age students, graduate students, and working adults who seek opportunities to learn and grow in an academic community of faith. The University provides the context for a transformational experience through excellent academics, service opportunities, caring relationships, and a nurturing spiritual and social environment. Faculty, staff, and students are challenged to achieve their highest potential, to become increasingly Christ-like and to make a difference in their world through lifelong service. Mount Vernon Nazarene University seeks a full-time (nine-month) English Faculty Member on the Mount Vernon main campus, beginning fall 2025. Rank is open. Compensation is competitive among the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities. Responsibilities may include:
  • Instructing courses in academic writing at the undergraduate level, including foundational and research-based writing.
  • Teaching in creative writing and literature.
  • Advising students as assigned.
  • Performing additional instructional or administrative assignments based on departmental needs and individual qualification.
  • Supporting departmental efforts for continued improvement of programs.
  • Serving the University through committee participation.

Qualifications:
  • Evangelical Christian statement of faith, experience, and mission fit.
  • Personal commitment to Jesus Christ.
  • Understanding and alignment of the heritage, doctrine, and practices of the Church of the Nazarene.
  • Evangelical Christian statement of faith, experience, and mission fit.
  • Ph.D. or M.F.A. in field (advanced ABD considered).
  • Evidence of scholarly potential.
  • Commitment to quality classroom instruction.
  • Strong individual and group communication skills.
  • Desire to help students succeed in the university setting.
  • Strong presentation skills, and commitment to quality classroom instruction and student learning.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and proven ability to work collaboratively with others.
