The University of Tennessee Health Science Center is conducting a search for Chair of the Department of Medicine for the Graduate School of Medicine, Knoxville campus. We seek an individual with documented accomplishments and national recognition in patient care, teaching, and clinical and translational research who can further enhance the development of established residencies and fellowships. The chair is responsible for the medicine residency program with 13 residents per year, the Neurology Residency program (starting July 2025 with an anticipated total of 8 residents at its plateau in 2028), the transitional program with a total of 6 residents, as well as Fellowships in Cardiovascular Disease, Pulmonary Disease/Critical Care Medicine, Interventional Cardiology, and Hematology/Oncology. In addition, educational programs for M3 and M4 medical students are offered.

Direct the education (LCME medical students, ACGME accredited residencies in Medicine and Transitional Year as well as Fellowships in Cardiovascular Disease, Pulmonary Disease/Critical Care Medicine, Interventional Cardiology, and Hematology/Oncology) research, and clinical activities of the department
Ensure the department meets all UTHSC and GSM policies and guidelines for financial management in addition to assuming responsibility for all finances of the department
Serve as Chief of Service for Medicine for the University Health System’s University of Tennessee Medical Center as well as provide leadership to resident clinics
Provide energetic leadership for the further growth and development of the department
Collaborate with other leaders in medicine and in the community
Overall administration of department, including budget, staff, space and other resources
Supervise faculty, including development of junior faculty
Manage health professional and graduate education components
Qualifications
Qualifications
MD degree or equivalent
Board-certified in Medicine and eligible for licensure in Tennessee upon appointment
Proven record of administration and management in an academic medical center setting
Demonstrated commitment to education
Dynamic leadership skills for further clinical, research, and academic growth
Distinguished, nationally recognized academic career with strong clinical and research credentials
Extensive knowledge of and commitment to excellence in teaching programs, relevant research programs, and state-of-the-art clinical services
Willingness to foster relationships between the University and other physicians in the community and surrounding region
Capable of providing energetic leadership for the further growth and development of this major clinical department in collaboration with principals responsible for other programs
Demonstrated ethical behavior, professionalism, interpersonal skills, leadership, and management abilities
Experience mentoring junior faculty
Demonstrated commitment to collegiality, collaboration, and service
Familiarity in recruitment development, utilization, and retention of faculty
Intimate knowledge of current professional trends in Medicine, Medical Education, and current trends in the professional and business practices of the health care system
