JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Plan and oversee the implementation of the ASO’s education and outreach programs, including Young People’s Concerts, Explorer Concerts, Educational Tour and Runout Concerts, Guest Artist master classes, INSPIRE Chamber Outreach, Music Meets Medicine, Momentum, and other education programming. Assess effectiveness of each activity. Use creativity and innovation in developing new programs to meet community needs and incorporate current education priorities and emerging technological opportunities. Work in conjunction with schools and other partners to develop materials used in teacher training, musician training, volunteer training, and student preparation for education programs. Oversee the work of any outside contractors in the development of these materials. Achieve budget education program revenue goals. Ensure that schools and school districts receive information about upcoming educational programs in a timely manner. Work with the Marketing Department to develop collateral materials for marketing educational programs, including brochures, newsletters, flyers, and advertisements as necessary. Cultivate and maintain professional relationships with teachers, school districts, colleges and universities, and other education/civic institutions. Act as the primary spokesperson for the ASO in education matters. Interact and get to know symphony patrons, members of the Symphony Volunteer Council, Junior Patrons, and Board of Directors- fostering relationships and keeping open lines of communication about the direction and accomplishments of the Education Department. Foster a strong relationship with the ASO Musicians through the Alabama Symphony Orchestra Committee and Artistic Advisory Committee. Work with the President and Operations staff to develop proposed annual education budgets for review as part of the annual budget approval process. In consultation with the President, develop programs and plans for achieving those budgetary goals. Monitor monthly performance against budget and adjust plans as necessary to ensure that, overall, the net cost of education programming is in line with budget expectations. Coordinate all activities with the ASO master calendar in consultation with Director of Artistic Administration and Operations Manager. Identify education trends that may present new opportunities for the ASO. Collaborate with the ASO Music Director, Principal Pops Conductor and ASYO Music Director to design programming and repertoire for concerts. Collaborate with the Development Department in developing funding proposals and reports for ongoing and new educational initiatives. Collaborate with the Conducting, Artistic, and Operation staff in the implementation of all education programs; coordinate with other ASO activities. Monitor and provide input into the orchestra musicians’ involvement in ensemble events sponsored by or supporting the ASO’s education efforts. Hire, train, manage, and evaluate the performance of all education staff, including the Education/Artistic Assistant, Youth Orchestra Manager, interns and volunteers. Staff the Education Committee. Work with the Education Committee chair to develop meeting agendas and opportunities for committee members to understand and engage with ASO education programs. Attend concerts of local school groups; act as a liaison between ASO and community education institutions.
