4807776 Alabama State University, Academic Affairs/College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, invites applications to fill the vacant position of Dean. The Dean will report to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs and is responsible for academic and administrative leadership of the programs and faculty of the college, which is comprised of the Departments of Communications Media, Criminal Justice and Social Sciences, History and Political Science, Languages and Literatures, Psychology, and Social Work.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Acts as a liaison between the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs and departments and programs to effect decision making, resolve problems, and anticipate and respond to the future needs; coordinates with other deans and chairs to ensure the delivery of quality educational services to meet the needs of students within the college; provides leadership in planning for the development of the college with the assistance of the department chairs; acts as the fiscal administrator of the college as a major cost center and is responsible for budgetary stability within the college; oversees grant activity in the college and performs other duties as assigned. An earned doctorate from an accredited institution of higher learning with a record of distinguished scholarship, research, teaching, and service in one of the fields of the liberal arts: Communications, History and Political Science, Languages and Literatures, Sociology, Psychology, Criminal Justice, or Social Work, five (5) years of successful academic leadership at the level of department chair or above, and credentials to qualify for the rank of professor in one of the college’s academic department are required. Substantial administrative experience with academic budgeting and financial planning; a successful record of developing, implementing, and sustaining innovative policies and programs that foster excellence in teaching, research, and service in higher education: experience relating to external constituencies such as public agencies, funding agencies, industry, alumni and donors, including a focus on garnering philanthropic, corporate, and grant support; demonstrated record of excellent interpersonal, leadership, and communication skis including the ability to motivate faculty and staff in cooperative efforts to support the University’s strategic vision are preferred.
