The Dean of the College of Business Administration serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the College, responsible for setting the academic vision and guiding the strategic direction of all programs, departments, and initiatives within the College. Departments within the college are Business Administration, Accounting and Finance, and Computer Information Systems. As a dynamic and collaborative leader, the Dean ensures the delivery of high-quality educational experiences, fosters faculty excellence through professional development and support, and promotes a student-centered culture that prioritizes academic achievement, career readiness, and personal growth. In addition to overseeing the day-to-day operations of the College, the Dean manages budgeting and faculty relations to ensure sound fiscal stewardship and operational efficiency. This role is essential to aligning the College’s objectives with the broader mission of Alabama State University by strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration, expanding access and enhancing institutional reputation. The Dean plays a pivotal role in cultivating strategic partnerships with industry, government, and community stakeholders to align academic programs with workforce needs and emerging market trends. The position also supports faculty and student research, drives innovation in curriculum design and delivery, and ensures continuous improvement through effective assessment and adherence to accreditation standards such as AACSB or other relevant bodies. In doing so, the Dean contributes directly to the long-term growth, impact, and relevance of the College of Business Administration both regionally and nationally.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Acts as liaison between the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs and departments and programs to effect decision making, resolve problems, and anticipate and respond to future needs; Develops and implements a culture of high standards and excellent performance; Supports faculty teaching, research and service in retooling academic programs for greater impact; Identifies and engages external constituencies to secure political, programmatic, and financial support; provides leadership and has the capacity to recruit and retain excellent faculty; Acts as the fiscal administrator of the college as a major cost center and is responsible for budgetary stability within the college; Oversees other grant activity and college programs to include the Small Business Development Center; Functions as a team player dedicated to achieving the specific goals of the College, consistent with the strategic vision of the university. An earned doctorate degree, a record of distinguished scholarship, research, and teaching, credentials to qualify for the rank of associate professor or full professor, and service in one of the disciplines of the
College of Business Administration:
Accounting, Business Administration, or Computer Information Systems; substantial administrative experience with academic budgeting and financial planning; a successful record of developing, implementing, and sustaining innovative policies and programs that foster excellence in teaching, research, and service in higher education; experience relating to external constituencies such as public agencies, funding agencies, industry, alumni, and donors, including a focus on garnering philanthropic, cooperate, and grant support; successful experience in the development of curriculum, personnel, and budget; and a demonstrated record of excellent interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills, including the ability to motivate faculty and staff in cooperative efforts to support the university’s strategic vision required. A minimum of 5 years of successful academic leadership at the level of department chair or above is preferred. It is to be noted that for the purpose of continuous improvement of faculty qualifications as faulty members complete advanced degrees, certifications, licenses, etc., the faculty member will send official documentation, within 45 days of hire, to the Office of Human Resources, and the credentialing file in Academic Affairs.
