Summary Statement of Job The Dean of Students for Grades 11 and 12 is a key member of the Upper School leadership team, responsible for maintaining a safe, respectful, and inclusive school environment. This role plays a central part in promoting positive student behavior, upholding the school’s Code of Conduct, and guiding students through the critical final years of high school. Balancing authority with mentorship, the Dean supports students in their personal growth, leadership development, and readiness for life beyond high school. Through proactive engagement and consistent accountability, the Dean helps students navigate challenges, build character, and graduate as responsible, self-aware individuals. Essential Responsibilities Student Discipline & Behavior Management Enforce and uphold the school’s Code of Conduct and behavior policies for 11th and 12th grade students. Address disciplinary infractions and behavioral violations with fairness, discretion, and a developmental approach. Lead or co-lead investigations of major school rules violations. Communicate promptly and effectively with students, parents, and faculty regarding disciplinary matters. Promote restorative justice and accountability, helping students learn from mistakes. Maintain detailed records of behavioral incidents and consequences. Partner with teachers to address classroom behavior concerns and implement interventions. Assist in managing detention programs. Meet with students to discuss behavioral concerns and set goals for improvement. Develop and monitor behavior contracts or intervention plans for students with behavioral concerns. Student Support & Leadership Development Build strong, supportive relationships with students and act as a trusted adult mentor. Guide students through issues related to stress, peer conflict, digital behavior, and personal challenges. Collaborate with college counseling, academic advisors, and student support services to ensure holistic care. Work with faculty and staff to identify students in need of behavioral or emotional support. Encourage student leadership through clubs, peer mentoring, and grade-level initiatives. Support the development of student identity, voice, and purpose during the transition to adulthood. School Culture & Programming Be a visible presence during school events, assemblies, and throughout the school day. Lead or assist in planning senior traditions, class meetings, graduation events, and student-led initiatives. Participate in decisions around school policy, discipline processes, and community expectations. Partner with faculty and advisors to ensure consistent communication of behavioral expectations. Facilitate programming on topics relevant to older students (e.g., ethics, time management, decision-making). Collaborate with the leadership team when reviewing or updating the student handbook or discipline procedures. Educational Requirements Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in education, counseling, student affairs, or related field preferred. At least 4-6 years of experience in a high school or student life leadership role. Deep understanding of adolescent development, particularly in late adolescence. Strong judgment, discretion, and communication skills. Experience managing complex student issues with care and professionalism. Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging and the school’s mission and values. Desired Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Experience in independent or college-preparatory schools. Familiarity with restorative practices, or character education. Confidence working with parents, particularly in times of conflict or concern. Collaborative leadership style with a student-centered approach. Bilingual or multicultural background a plus.
