DivisionDirector, Palliative MedicineThe Department of Family andPreventive Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine invitesapplications for the leadership position of Division Director forthe Division of Palliative Medicine.
The Division Director forPalliative Medicine plays a pivotal role in advancing the academicmission of the Division, encompassing education, research, andfaculty development, while maintaining a close collaborativerelationship with the Director of the Emory Palliative Care Center(EPCC). The clinical and academic missions within PalliativeMedicine are distinct but interconnected, necessitating seamlesscoordination to ensure excellence in both domains.
KeyResponsibilitiesAcademic Leadership Advocate for the Division through collegial and consultativeleadership, driving innovation in education, fostering researchexcellence, and supporting strategic growth initiatives. Supervise Division faculty, conducting annual careerconferences and performance reports, and providing mentorship tofaculty and trainees, including fellows in PalliativeMedicine. Collaborate with the Department Chair, Vice Chairs, and otherleaders within the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine onstrategic planning initiatives. Promote and support professional development and empowerment atall levels within the Division. Ensure the Division’s contributions to the Department’sacademic and research goals align with institutionalpriorities. Represent the Division within Emory University’s academic andclinical leadership structures.
Collaboration with the EmoryPalliative Care Center and its Director Maintain an essential collaborative relationship with the EPCCDirector to ensure alignment such that academic and clinicalmissions can be accomplished by all faculty. Coordinate with the EPCC Director on strategic initiatives,faculty development plans, and resource allocation to support boththe Division and the Center. Support the academic development of all faculty including thosewhose clinical duties are aligned with the EPCC, working jointlywith the EPCC Director and relevant Department Chairs. Participate in joint initiatives that bridge the Division’sacademic priorities with the Center’s clinical operations andquality improvement efforts.
Educational and ResearchExcellence Lead the Division’s efforts to innovate and advance educationin Palliative Medicine, including partnership with others in thedivision who are responsible for undergraduate medical education,residency, fellowship, and continuing medical education. Foster a robust research portfolio within the Division,promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and securing funding forstudies addressing key aspects of Palliative Medicine. Serve as a mentor and advisor to faculty and trainees engagedin research activities.
Operational Responsibilities Oversee faculty recruitment, retention, and career progressionwithin the Division. Convene regular Division meetings to facilitate communication,strategic planning, and faculty engagement. Ensure compliance with institutional policies andstandards.
QualificationsEligible candidates must have boardcertification in hospice and palliative medicine or demonstrationof an academic focus within the field and be eligible to hold aregular faculty appointment in the Department of Family andPreventive Medicine or a closely related field. They mustdemonstrate a record of accomplishment in education, research,and/or clinical care within Palliative Medicine or a relateddiscipline. Exceptional leadership, communication, andinterpersonal skills are essential.
Relationships and ReportingStructureThe Division Director reports directly to the Chair of theDepartment of Family and Preventive Medicine. For clinical mattersand initiatives impacting the EPCC, the Division Director must workclosely and collaboratively with the EPCC Director, ensuring aunified approach to advancing Palliative Medicine across EmoryUniversity and its affiliated entities.
