Job Details The Department of Education and Wellness within the School of Arts and Sciences at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) seeks to hire a dynamic leader to serve as Department Head. The position of Department Head is a full-time, 12-month, administrative appointment, with the incumbent also holding rank (Associate/Professor) as a tenure-track faculty member. The successful candidate will hold a doctorate in Education, Elementary Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or a closely related field, with appropriate credentials qualifying them to offer courses in Elementary Education. Moreover, the successful candidate will bring with them significant experience in higher education sufficient to warrant appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. This appointment would begin on July 1, 2025. The position is open until filled. ABAC is a residential state college located in Tifton, Georgia, named one of the best 100 small towns in America. ABAC has an approximate enrollment of 3800. The Department of Education and Wellness is home to an interdisciplinary faculty and presently offers the Core Curriculum A.S. Elementary Education and Teacher Preparation pathways, along with the physical education courses (PHED 1101 Health and Wellness, and various PHED physical activity classes) that are required for all ABAC students. ABAC plans to develop/offer an Elementary Education B.S. degree, and there may be opportunities to develop additional education-related programming to help serve the needs of our rural South Georgia communities. Thus, the successful candidate will be a strongly motivated and enthusiastic individual with a firm commitment to excellence in teaching and experience with program development. Applicants must have a strong commitment to undergraduate education and be able to foster a collaborative atmosphere among students and faculty. In addition to teaching education courses, on reduced teaching load, the department head will:

  • Direct, supervise, and observe/evaluate departmental faculty
  • Advise and counsel students and respond to student concerns
  • Coordinate faculty searches
  • Ensure representation on appropriate USG advisory committees
  • Ensure that ABAC programs stay in compliance with applicable professional standards
  • Manage the department course schedule
  • Hire and supervise part-time instructors
  • Build/maintain relationships with regional K-12 schools and districts
  • Support student recruitment efforts
  • Support departmental and college-wide initiatives and service ventures
  • Coordinate departmental assessment efforts, as well as the development of new courses and programs and improvement of existing curricula
  • Engage students inside and outside of the classroom
  • Engage in discipline appropriate scholarship/research
