STATEMENT OF DUTIES
The Dean for the School of Languages, Arts, Humanities, and Social Science Programs provides visionary and strategic leadership for a diverse range of academic disciplines including English, World Languages, Fine and Performing Arts, Humanities, Communication, Social Sciences, and the like. The Dean is responsible for the overall administration, coordination, and development of the School’s academic offerings and faculty. This position supports academic excellence, innovation in teaching and learning, and equitable student success. The Dean works collaboratively with faculty, staff, administrators, and external stakeholders to support student success.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Academic Leadership Provide strategic direction and academic leadership for departments and programs within the School. Support the development and implementation of curriculum and academic pathways that promote equity, inclusion, and student success. Ensure academic programs meet institutional, state, and accreditation standards. Lead efforts in academic innovation, including alternative credentialing, open educational resources (OER), and interdisciplinary program development. Personnel Management Recruit, mentor, evaluate, and support faculty and academic staff within the School. Oversee faculty workload, including teaching assignments, reassigned time, and sabbaticals. Promote a culture of collaboration, shared governance, and continuous improvement. Policy Development & Compliance Ensure compliance with Massachusetts state policies, Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) guidelines, and accreditation standards. Monitor legislative changes related to MassEducate, MassReconnect, and other state initiatives. Develop policies and procedures to streamline enrollment, placement, and credit transfer for students. Faculty and Curriculum Development Collaborate with academic departments, deans, and faculty to ensure course offerings maintain rigorous academic standards that meet the needs of degrees and programs. Support faculty in adapting courses fo delivery, including competency-based learning, online modalities, and hybrid instruction. Provide training and resources to faculty teaching in campus and high school settings to ensure consistency in curriculum and student experience. Student Success and Retention Champion initiatives that promote equitable access, retention, and completion Support culturally responsive pedagogy and inclusive classroom practices. Partner with student services to enhance advising, support services, and co-curricular engagement. Data Management & Reporting Lead data collection and analysis to track student participation, retention, completion rates, and postsecondary enrollment outcomes. Provide regular reports to institutional leadership and external stakeholders to assess program impact and areas for improvement. Use labor market data and skills-mapping tools such as Lightcast or O•NET to align programs with high-demand careers. Planning, Budget, and Assessment Develop and manage the School’s budget in alignment with institutional priorities Support enrollment planning and course scheduling to ensure program availability and efficiency. Lead program review, learning outcomes assessment, and continuous improvement efforts.
Requirements:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Required Qualifications:
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree (or eight years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree). Minimum of four years of experience in higher education administration. Minimum of four years of relevant experience in leadership within a higher education environment. Proven experience in developing and scaling educational programs at a community college or higher education institution. Demonstrated commitment to equity, access, and inclusion in education. Experience with curriculum development, program assessment, and faculty development. Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Doctorate in a discipline represented within the School or in Educational Leadership or Administration Experience at a community college or open-access institution. Knowledge of innovative pedagogical practices, including online, hybrid, and competency-based education. Familiarity with collective bargaining environments. Experience leading interdisciplinary teams and initiatives.
