Teaching Full Job Description Position Summary:

The Director of Comprehensive Student Wellness is responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive, standards-aligned PK-12 program in physical education, health education, and social and emotional learning (SEL). This role ensures that all students have access to inclusive, developmentally appropriate opportunities that support physical health, mental well-being, and social-emotional growth. The Director provides instructional leadership, oversees curriculum design, ensures compliance with state and federal mandates, and fosters a culture of wellness and belonging.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide visionary leadership for PK-12 physical education, health, wellness, and social-emotional learning across the district. Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum aligned with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for Comprehensive Health and Physical Education, and research-based SEL competencies. Supervise and support department staff through regular observation, evaluation, and coaching. Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal health and physical education requirements, including mandated reporting, physical fitness assessments, and health screenings. Collaborate with school administrators, counselors, nurses, and student support teams to implement integrated wellness and SEL strategies within MTSS. Lead efforts related to the district’s wellness policy, including physical activity, nutrition, mental health, and substance use prevention. Manage department budgets and oversee the procurement of instructional materials, equipment, and supplies for both physical health and SEL programs. Cultivate partnerships with families and community organizations to expand access to health, wellness, and SEL supports. Serve as the district liaison to local and state agencies on matters related to physical education, health, wellness, and SEL. Collect, analyze, and report data on student outcomes, curriculum implementation, and program effectiveness. Support grant writing and pursue external funding opportunities to enhance wellness and SEL initiatives. Champion equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive practices in all health, wellness, and SEL programming. Teaching responsibilities (up to .4) depending on needs.

Qualifications:
Required:

Master’s Degree in Education, Health Education, Physical Education, or STEM related field. Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) licensure as a Supervisor/Director in Health or Physical Education. Minimum of five years of successful teaching and/or administrative experience in physical education or health education. Demonstrated leadership skills and knowledge of current research and best practices in health and wellness education. Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred:

Experience with staff supervision and evaluation under the MA Educator Evaluation Framework. Experience with school- or district-level leadership in wellness initiatives. Bilingual or bicultural candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

Work Conditions:

Work year is 195 days. Requires frequent travel between schools within the district. Does require evening meetings, presentations, or participation in community events. Involves sitting, standing, and occasional lifting of materials/equipment related to program needs.
