Learning Specialist 3.3 3.3 out of 5 stars 204 N Grand St, Mexico, MO 65265 Keeps abreast of academic data, student academic files and course grades in order to effectively understand the academic challenges of students. Supports instructors in adjusting and improving curricula and pedagogy; trains instructors as they differentiate classroom instruction. Works in conjunction with the Academic Dean, Dean of Faculty, Director of Curriculum and Associate Dean of the Middle School to recommend tutors, testing, and other academic support. Prepares and implements plans of action for continual academic intervention of 6-12th grade cadets. Researches innovative approaches to pedagogy; continually seeks out new learning resources; effectively uses instructional technology and new teaching methods to educate students. Tests incoming students in order to assess academic deficiencies and student placement in classes. Assists students in understanding their own learning by assessing their cognitive strengths and weaknesses. Attends local, state and national conferences/workshops in order to attain the needed expertise in the role of Learning Specialist. Regularly communicates with students’ parents, advisors, residential staff and teachers about the academic struggles, classroom behavior and other developmental issues that may affect the educational progress of students. Collaborates with academic leadership teams about student development, teacher instruction, teacher training, and parent involvement. When appropriate, goes into classrooms to help modify lessons, support teacher instruction and pinpoint student learning issues. Holds small group instruction and one on one tutorials for students with severe needs in reading, writing, mathematics and other subject-areas. Works with students who have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, have language or visual processing problems, poor motivation, low academic self-esteem, test anxiety, non-verbal learning disorders, and poor study skills. Develops a cross-curricular program to assist teachers in finding ways to address the academic needs of our students. In consultation with the Academic Dean, Dean of Faculty, Associate Dean of the Middle School and Director of Curriculum, develops and maintains criteria for students who need academic support. Attends and participates in faculty meetings, departmental meetings, school events, and professional development activities deemed necessary and appropriate for the Learning Specialist. Creates a Learning Resource Center environment that is inviting, helpful and conducive to the learning process. Bachelor’s in Special Education, Counseling, or related field required; Master’s in Special Education, Counseling, or related field; certification in School Psychology, Special Education or Licensed Professional Counselor. To offer specialized support and intervention to 7th-12th grade students with learning difficulties. The type of support and intervention includes tutorials, small-group instruction, data analysis, collaboration with essential stakeholders (parents, teachers, academic teams, faculty advisors), teacher training, and instructional/curriculum modification and support.
