JOB DESCRIPTION
The Residence Hall Director is a full time, 10-month, live-in general staff member responsible for the daily operations of a residence hall or on-campus apartment. The Housing and Residence Life Office is committed to providing residents a comfortable, educational, diverse, and caring community where academic success, personal growth, and social responsibility are valued. A live-in position is one where the individual maintains an on-campus apartment as their primary residence. RHDs must reside in an on-campus apartment to fulfill the duties of the position. The department provides an apartment and meal plan to allow the RHD to be visible in their community, eat meals in the cafeteria, attend meetings and events regularly, and respond to emergencies within their community.
QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience in working with high school or college students preferred
Previous work experience in Housing and Residence Life
Possess good verbal communication, organizational, and time management skills
Roles, Duties, and Responsibilities:
The Residence Hall Director is responsible for cultivating a sense of belonging through a variety of student engagement and student success initiatives within the residence hall. The Residence Hall Director reports to and collaborates with the Residence Life Coordinators for programmatic initiatives, and the overall student experience of their assigned residential community. The duties and responsibilities are as follows: Administrative Duties Display initiative in administering the managerial duties and responsibilities relevant to the position
Prepare assigned residence hall for all residents to move into prior to the fall and spring semester
Inspect all rooms and complete Room Inventory Forms
Confirm the correct number of working keys for each room
Submit timely requests for any custodial or maintenance issues
Post mandatory meeting and room inspection signs
Maintain accurate and confidential records for every student in the residence hall.
This includes:
Personal Data Card
Documented GIGs (room inspection documentation)
Documented verbal warnings, written warnings, and incident reports
Maintain accurate records for every assigned bed in the residence hall.
This includes:
Keys and key codes
Room inventory Forms
Updated floor plan
Work Orders requested for residential rooms and ensuring work orders completed
Perform computer skills as listed:
Knowledge of and/or capable of retrieving, reading, and sending emails (this is the method of submitting work orders for all residence halls)
Completing reports in Word (Incident reports, Bi-weekly reports)
Reviewing access for the Campus ID card
Review cameras, bookmark events
Lock and/or unlock and secure the assigned residence hall at specified times
Conduct room inspections:
Announced monthly residence hall room inspection to be made according to the rules as specified in the Student Guide, including posting the date(s) of the inspection at least two working days in advance
Unannounced monthly room inspections: no GIGs are issued, but residents are informed of cleaning and maintenance issues
Submit maintenance reports after weekly inspections
Properly check out each residence hall student and submit accurate paperwork based on each check-out with documented charges
The room should be physically inspected to confirm that the resident removed all personal belongings and did not damage any NWCC property. Coordinate educational and social programs for residence hall students Programming, Leadership, and Advocacy for Student Success With the guidance and support of the Residence Life Coordinator, the Residence Hall Director will: Contribute to the assessment, development, and facilitation of the residential initiatives
Serve as a partner in students’ development by working with representative offices of Student Services amongst other departments at the college
Serve as the immediate supervisor for 1-2 Resident Assistants and 2-3 Information Assistants
Facilitate leadership opportunities and support all students in leadership development, specifically leadership events sponsored by Housing and Residence Life
Contribute to recruitment and retention programs and initiatives Student Conduct and Crisis Management Address any violations of the Code of Student Conduct by documenting the situation and referring the student to the Director of Housing and Residence Life through a Campus Appearance Ticket and Incident Report. The incident report should be submitted one business day after the incident. Incident reports should be typed and spell-checked
Review archived activities via camera software and report any violations
Communicate any student concerns as it pertains to mental health and Title IX-related issues to the appropriate administrators
Assist in the case of emergencies and severe weather with the assigned residence hall
Maintain an accurate list of all residents to be utilized in case of fire, tornado, or other emergencies requiring students to evacuate
Follow procedures as outlined in emergency NWCC Emergency Response Plan
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
Computer application skills to complete work orders
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
Strong interpersonal skills to interact tactfully and courteously students, staff and others
Ability to collaborate with others and work as part of a team
Flexible schedule is required to meet department needs, as some evenings, weekends, and extended hours may be required
After hours work for events set up and clean up required during events
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Ability to communicate professionally both orally and in written form
Climb stairs to reach the highest floor of the assigned residence hall multiple times throughout the day
Walking (inside and outside in the elements of wind, rain, snow, etc.). Residence Hall Directors are required to be able to access all of the residence hall rooms
Lifting residence hall mattresses to inspect for damage and desk chairs to place appropriately in the room
Bending at the waist and/or knees to open drawers, look under beds, etc. Arm movement to open closet doors, drawers of chests, and desks, as well as reaching arms above head to reach shelves. Ability to manipulate keys to unlock doors and insert “blades” at residence hall closures
Sitting to view cameras, perform computer work, greet residents, complete paperwork, etc. Hand movement to type, write, file, and other clerical duties
Speaking to students, guests, and other college officials regarding the policies and processes for students who reside on campus, including respectful confrontation
Ability to view a computer screen for 15 – 30 minutes at a time
Resides primarily in provided housing accommodations while residents are on campus
Able to work two evening shifts during the week
Other Duties as assigned by the Residence Life Coordinator, Director of Housing and Residence Life, and District Dean of Student Services
