Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director of the Center for Student Success and Academic Excellence, the Assistant Director of First-Year and Second-Year Experience, Family Engagement, and Living Learning Communities is responsible for orchestrating a comprehensive and integrated approach to support the academic and social transition of first-year and second-year students at Johnson C. Smith University. This role encompasses the development of Living Learning Communities, along with robust services, resources, and programs tailored to freshmen and sophomores. The Assistant Director will also spearhead the Parent and Family Relations initiative, enhancing the engagement between the university and students’ families. The coordinators of the Becoming Kings, Becoming Queens, and Being LGBTQIA+ report to this role.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL
JOB FUNCTIONS
Serves as the university’s primary resource and point of contact for the first- and second-year student experience at Johnson C. Smith University; and, stays abreast of first- and second-year programmatic trends in higher education and best practices.
Oversees the creation and implementation of Living Learning Communities, aligning them with academic and social goals to foster a supportive learning environment.
Leads the design and execution of orientation programs (Golden Bull Academy) and ongoing educational, cultural, and social activities tailored to first-year and second-year students.
Develops and manages resources and programs under the Family Relations initiative to strengthen the support system involving students’ families and the university.
SMS-100 Course and Workshop Coordination inclusive of teaching at minimum one section of the course and organizing workshops related to the Student Success Initiative. Supervises the peer-coaches for the SMS 100 course.
Collaborates with key university departments (Admissions, Financial Aid, Housing and Residence Life, Academic Advisors/Success Coaches) to ensure a seamless integration of services for new and continuing students.
Managing students on academic sanction, including developing specialized programs for first- and second-year students in this category.
Deploys and oversees the progress report campaigns each semester.
Implements assessment tools to measure the effectiveness and impact of the First-Year and Second-Year Experience and Living Learning Communities.
Participates in strategic university-wide retention efforts and contributes to planning teams and committees focused on enhancing student engagement and success.
Works with Institutional Advancement on the creation of States/Cities Clubs, as well as Parent/Family philanthropy and giving initiatives
Support the programming for summer bridge programs.
Serves as one of the administrators of the BullsNav (EAB Navigate360) platform, and manages progress report campaigns.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs general duties as required, including but not limited to: Facilitates a work environment that fosters diversity, inclusion, and respect for a wide range of student backgrounds.
Engages in professional development and remains current with trends and best practices in student affairs and first-year experience programs.
Manages communication strategies including newsletters, social media, and websites to keep students and families informed and engaged.
Qualifications
A Master’s degree and demonstrated experience working with second-year students, retention efforts, and/or academic achievement/support services. Knowledge of and proficiency with integrated student information systems such as Jenzabar, Banner or Beacon. Knowledge of laws, regulations, and mandates relevant to the student and academic information (e.g., FERPA, NCAA, VA). Records management, including security and preservation of records. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required. Some evening and weekend work is occasionally required.
