Responsibilities
Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs, TRIO and Well-being, the Director of the McNair Scholars Program is responsible for the administration and management of the federally funded TRIO Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program. The Director is responsible for allocating and managing resources and objectives of the Program, for efficient fiscal management, staff hiring, planning, coordination, and implementation of the funded grant proposal.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL
JOB FUNCTIONS
Lead and direct all aspects of the federal McNair Program.
Direct all facets pertaining to the External Summer Research Fellowships
Supervise and evaluate core personnel.
Draft and manage all aspects of both federal and non-federal budgets and finances.
Design program curricula. Coordinate evaluation of operational components and activities.
Appoint, convene and facilitate the McNair Advisory Committee.
Develop and implement operational policies and procedures.
Generate all federal, state, and institutional reports for compliance issues. Write and submit proposals to secure funding.
Advise participants regarding graduate school preparation (as needed).
Act as key contact between departmental units and other campus departments, local, state and national entities, as well as other colleges and universities.
Serve on related campus committees to better advocate for departmental units and participants.
Recruit faculty mentors for research fellows.
Plan, design, supervise, and implement viable and timely research projects on issues related to educational opportunity.
Disseminate conclusions of research projects, as well as other relevant topics, in the form of published written report(s) and/or presentations at professional conferences.
Comply with federal and state regulations as well as institutional policies in management of grant funds.
Respond to information requests; log and monitor applications of prospective students.
Maintain program records.
Conduct longitudinal tracking and update program databases.
Performs other duties as required to meet organizational needs.
Qualifications
A master’s degree in education, counseling and guidance, educational administration, student personnel services, or a related field. Three to five years of experience designing, managing or implementing TRIO programs or similar projects required. Graduate level research experience. Knowledge of budget planning. At least five years supervisory and/or training experience. Program development and implementation skills. Organizational leadership. Strong oral and written communication. Demonstrated ability to work with grant-eligible students. Understanding of graduate education. Knowledge of assessment and evaluation. Previous experience overcoming academic and economic barriers to success is helpful.
The successful candidate will demonstrate experience in report writing and administering federally funded programs; computer literacy using databases and word processing programs; experience or knowledge of problems facing low income, first generation and students with disabilities; the ability to communicate and work effectively with program staff, University faculty, staff and administration and community agencies; strong analytical and communication skills, sound professional judgement, initiative and the ability to work effectively with a diverse group of individuals including students, faculty, staff and the general public. Must be organized and an effective time manager with strong attention to detail and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks with minimal supervision. The equivalent combination of education and related work experience may be considered.
