Dean of Faculty and Dean of Academics Qualifications:
NHED license in a content area. Master’s in Education or Discipline and 5 years’ teaching experience OR a minimum of 10 years’ teaching experience and enrolled in a Master’s Degree program in Education or Discipline with completion within 3 years. Principal or Curriculum Administrator endorsement preferred; required to obtain within 5 years. Profile of an Associate Dean of Academics An associate dean of academics is an educational leader at Pinkerton Academy and assists with the management of the school and the implementation of Pinkerton Academy’s mission and vision. An associate dean of academics works alongside the dean of faculty and the dean of academics with the planning, coordination, evaluation, and management of academic personnel, programs, and activities at Pinkerton Academy. An associate dean of academics is responsible for leading an academic department and supporting their faculty in the development and implementation of curriculum and assessments. Furthermore, an associate dean of academics is responsible for carrying out policies and procedures outlined in the employee handbook as well as serving as a leader in all aspects of academic life at the Academy. A visible presence in the Pinkerton community, associate deans of academics forge positive relationships with stakeholders on campus and in the greater school community. Essential Skills and Abilities of an Associate Dean of Academics Coordinate Curriculum Assesses, revises, and monitors departmental program of studies, including course descriptions and prerequisites, rationale, goals and objectives, and course content, as well as provides course catalog updates. Coordinate textbook evaluation. Evaluates assessment materials. Collaborates with sending town educators in developing sequential programs, develops agendas for annual sending town meetings, communicates when appropriate with regard to student placement, and makes recommendations for incoming students. Evaluates and submits new course proposals. Collaborates and coordinates with the curriculum and instruction coordinator and lead teachers Maintains and updates curriculum maps that are aligned with local, state, and national standards. Collaborates with their department to set department goals and carry them out. Academic and Instructional Support Advises teachers in areas of best practices, including teaching strategies, classroom management, and student evaluation procedures. Dedicates time to professional learning in self and others while supporting and participating in professional growth and development. Collaborates with support services and outside agencies to develop plans for struggling students (tutoring, special education, behavioral interventions). Works with teachers to develop proactive solutions to academic, behavioral, and disciplinary issues. Establishes and monitors disciplinary measures at the departmental level. Investigate methods to improve the quality of instruction within the department. Keeps teachers informed of new developments in instructional/technological materials. Observes teachers for evaluation, coaching, and providing both formal and informal feedback. Coordinates with technology integration specialists to keep members of the department familiar with available resources and recommends the acquisition of materials. Counsels and advises students and parents on academic topics (class levels, teacher concerns, etc.) Personnel Management Manages teaching assignments within the department based on the department and school needs. Conducts formal observations and observations as part of teacher evaluation and writes annual staff evaluations, identifying strengths and opportunities for growth based on observations, staff input, administrative input, and other sources. Screens candidates and collaborates with the administration in the selection and orientation of new personnel. Assigns new personnel with appropriate mentors. Clarifies school policies and procedures. Assists substitute teachers assigned to the department. Assists in the placement of student observers/teachers assigned to the department. Works with the dean of faculty in the implementation of improvement plans and monitoring of growth plans. Monitors grading policies and procedures in PLC. Pinkerton Community Develops and maintains positive professional relationships with faculty and staff. Assists in providing leadership to the professional staff in determining objectives and identifying school needs for long-term and short-term planning purposes. Administrative Responsibilities Demonstrates knowledge of educational law with regard to special education and 504. Remains current on changes to state and federal statutes. Represents department information on school policies/procedures related to the subject area. Prepares agenda for and conducts departmental meetings. Monitors PLC meetings and provides feedback on PLC reports. Participates in associate dean of academics meetings. Informs students, faculty, and community members of the program of studies within the department. Works with various student services in the placement or assignment of students in courses within the department, while also working with the registrar and dean of academics for transcript review for transfer students. Develops and administers departmental budgets. Processes budget orders, unpacks and receives items, responds to emails, performs other administrative requests, and participates in the hiring process as needed during the summer months. Supervises and maintains departmental equipment and resources as necessary. Completes departmental reports/surveys. Receives and distributes departmental correspondence. Acts as liaison between all constituent groups and faculty. Hosts visitors to the department and assists with public relations. Coordinates student participation in departmental co-curricular activities (department assessments, independent studies, field trips, etc). Teaching Responsibilities Required to teach a course(s) within the department. Operates a variety of office equipment and technology in an educational environment. Communicates effectively with a variety of platforms to audiences both internal and external to Pinkerton. Identifies and analyzes a variety of problems and situations, drawing evidence-based conclusions. Attends events outside the regular school day as determined by the deans of faculty and academics or the head of school. Performs supervisory duties outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
