Job Description

SYMS Head Counselor 2.5 2.5 out of 5 stars Durham, NH USNH Employees should apply within Workday through the Jobs Hub app Internal Candidates Exist Assist the Dean of Campers to lead and organize the “student life” portion of UNH’s Summer Youth Music School (SYMS). SYMS is the UNH Music Department’s primary recruiting event, oriented toward middle-school and high-school students. The Head Counselors will work with the Dean of Campers and college student camp counselors to ensure the safety of campers, coordinating their efforts with the SYMS Director. This position demands the completed attention of the successful candidate during the entire duration of the camp (24 hours a day). The Head Counselors will frequently communicate with the Dean of Campers and the SYMS Director about all camper needs and concerns. The successful applicant will be required to undergo a background check and training in the protection of minors. Duties/Responsibilities Assist in planning for SYMS (5%) During the spring semester prior to SYMS, the Camp Director will need assistance in determining certain schedules and procedures for the upcoming camp. The Head Counselors will respond to inquiries in a timely manner, providing needed input from the point of view of camper safety. Serve as Dean of Campers during SYMS (95%) Participate in the training of the counseling staff. Live on campus with the counseling staff and campers in the dormitory housing. Respond to all concerns forwarded to the them by the other counselors, campers, SYMS faculty, and other SYMS staff. Communicate frequently and clearly with the Dean of Campers and Camp Director regarding all significant student concerns. Assist the Camp Director in completing incident reports in a timely manner, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience :

Bachelor’s degree in music and experience as a head counselor at an overnight camp or extensive experience as an overnight camp counselor.

Other Requirements :

Demonstrated ability to work sympathetically with adolescents while providing personal/behavioral guidance.

Significant experience with residential camps for youth.
