POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Simulation will lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of simulation-based education and operations across all four years of the DO curriculum. This role involves close collaboration with the Sim/SP Team, faculty, students, Duquesne University School of Health Sciences, and community partners to deliver high-quality, competency-driven simulation experiences. The Director provides strategic and operational oversight of the simulation center, ensuring alignment with our mission, accreditation standards, institutional goals, and the AACOM competencies.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Academic:

Partners with Sim Team and faculty to design and integrate simulation experiences throughout Years 1-4 of the DO curriculum. Promotes best practices in scenario development, simulation technology use, and debriefing methodology. Collaborates with the School of Health Sciences, GME programs, and community partners to support educational initiatives for allied health professionals, resident trainees, and faculty. Assists in the coordination and development of interprofessional simulation encounters in collaboration with the COM and other healthcare professionals.

Administrative:

Provides operational oversight and support for all simulation center activities. Ensures the alignment of curriculum initiatives with an eye towards overlap and needed resources to ensure the smooth functioning of sim center workflow. Works with Sim Directors and Sim Team to develop and manage the simulation center’s budget, staffing, and resource allocation. Establishes systems for data tracking, outcomes measurement, and continuous quality improvement. Leads the preparation and maintenance of documentation required for accreditation (e.g., COCA, SSH). Coordinates with DUQCOM departments and sim staff to ensure smooth flow of curricular calendars, logistics, and resources for simulation sessions, tours, and other simulation events. Works with Assistant Dean of Sim to ensure simulation programming aligns with institutional priorities, our mission, AACOM competencies, and COCA standards.

Service:

Participates in required COM faculty development and training as required. Participates in student events including the White Coat ceremony, service day, graduation, and orientation as assigned. Serves on College and University committees as assigned. Participates in other service activities as designated by the Assistant Dean of Simulation.

Research/Scholarly:

Participates in innovative scholarship and research related to simulation education in collaboration with other faculty and staff. Participates in grant-related opportunities and grant writing to support and enhance the simulation and task trainer education at the COM. Participates in simulation-related training, continuing education, collaborations, and other related activities to maintain competency and be aware of new ideas and opportunities for innovation. Supports simulation-based educational scholarship, including evaluation and research initiatives. Completes other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

Minimum qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution and/or 3+ years of simulation operations experience and leadership. Demonstrated experience and/or training in healthcare simulation and/or standardized patients. Must have excellent written, verbal, management, administrative, and organizational skills with the ability to balance multiple priorities. Must be able to effectively interact with administration, faculty, staff, and students as well as build and unify teams. Must be supportive of the mission of the COM and be willing to collaborate with the University and COM leadership to achieve the mission and vision. Demonstrated experience developing simulated manikin cases and task trainer-related curriculum.

Preferred qualifications:

Master’s Degree with an emphasis in health care or health profession degree. Demonstrated experience in nursing, pharmacy, pre-hospital, or medical education. Experience building educational simulation scenarios using best practices of educational or instructional design principles. Alternately, the successful candidate may possess any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential job functions. This includes, but is not limited to, the following: Effective oral communication with others. Effective written communication. Ability to perform many tasks in a short period of time. Ability to collaborate with colleagues and supervisory staff at all levels. Ability to prioritize and organize numerous and varied assignments. Knowledge of medical terminology. Knowledge of computers and various software programs. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Intuitively able to reason, analyze information, and develop a decision to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature. Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills, i.e.. Microsoft Office, Microsoft Word, Excel, etc. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the University Community. Ability and willingness to contribute actively to the mission of the University and to respect the Spiritan Catholic identity of Duquesne University.
