Internal Title Assistant Director of Student Involvement for Programming Position Type Classified Faculty / Non-Faculty / Administration Non-Faculty Pay Band 5 Level 2 Department Student Life Job Purpose The Assistant Director’s primary job purpose is the oversight, management, and advisement of dynamic student programming board Cougar Activities Board (CAB) to promote best practices, student learning, and the achievement of departmental and divisional goals. This position provides advisement, vision and strategic direction to the Cougar Activities Board. Provides educational and developmental learning opportunities for student leaders and advisors. They serve as consultant to and expert resource for programming and event planning including but not limited to brainstorming, contract negotiating, event management, facility reservation, event execution, and evaluation. Minimum Requirements Bachelor’s degree is required, as well as previous work experience in a college or university setting, event planning, or conference services. Master’s degree with an emphasis in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Student Personnel, or Leadership preferred. Experience advising student groups, event planning, and management required. Knowledge of and ability to apply student development theory to practical situations. Knowledge of assessment practices in higher education. A valid identification card is required for this position. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to provide leadership training and workshops related to program planning, budgeting, marketing, committee recruitment, and retention is essential. Strong interpersonal, communication (written & oral), and organizational skills. Ability to create, interpret, and apply policies and procedures. General knowledge with working with outside vendors, agents, organizations and resources related to campus programming (examples include

NACA, APCA, ACUI

). Ability to develop complex budgets and monitor expenditures. Knowledge of the use of social media to market Student Involvement programs. Ability to create a welcoming environment and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, faculty/staff and the public. Additional Comments Regarding Position Evening and weekend hours required. This position could have alternative working hours during the academic year as determined with the supervisor. Occasional out-of-state overnight travel. Expected to work collaboratively with other members of the Student Involvement and Leadership staff to provide diverse and balanced programs that can contribute to the holistic education of College of Charleston students. Job Duties Activity Student Programming Board Advisement:

Advises the student members of the College’s primary programming board, Cougar Activities Board, during all stages of the planning, implementation, and evaluation of student programs and activities, which includes late-night programming. Assists each programming board committee or chairperson in developing a strong, effective committee by advising on member recruitment and management, developing and participating in orientation and training programs for those committees, and facilitating member development activities. Assists with the development of the programming board members by planning and implementing programs that encourage individual student development, leadership skills, organizational development, and community on campus. Coordinates with students and other College offices with respect to physical plan set-up, sound, and lighting contracts, food service and catering, risk management procedures, and promotion of events to ensure that all events sponsored by the boards are successful. Activity Personnel Management:

Oversees the advisement of the Cougar Activities Board (CAB). Assists in the development of outcomes-based learning training for students. Provides educational and developmental opportunities for student and professional staff throughout their experience. Conducts weekly meetings with students to plan and assess. Facilitates group and committee meetings in collaboration with student leaders. Manages volunteers and develops training material. Reviews and approves time sheets for student leaders. Activity Student Programming Board Financial Management:

Ensures that business transactions, including ticket sales, contracts, income deposits, and expense requisitions undertaken by the programming board comply with College and State of South Carolina procedures and regulations by negotiating and issuing contracts on behalf of the programming boards, supervising bidding of programs, and hiring and supervising student staff and professional staff associated with those contracts. Works with student leaders and the Associate Director for Student Organizations, Programming, and Events to develop budget requests for each programming board, and maintains oversight of spending and reconciliation of funds for each board. Activity Student Involvement Programming and Events:

Facilitates the development of co-sponsored programs by developing strong network ties with other departments like: New Student Programs, Residence Life, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Athletics, Facilities, Audio/Visual Team, and Aramark. Promotes a positive image of the College of Charleston by assisting the Associate Director for Student Organizations, Programming and Events, and the Executive Director of Student Involvement in the planning, development, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of major College-wide special events, such as Weeks of Welcome, Homecoming, Family Weekend/Day, Maroon Mayhem, and other programs. Activity Department Management:

Contributes to weekly meetings of Student Involvement staff and areas of responsibility. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development meetings or conferences, and attending training and/or courses required by the Associate Director of Student Involvement or the Executive Director of Student Involvement. Supports the overall operation of any student engagement facilities managed by the department and the Higdon Center. Contributes to the department’s success by performing other duties as assigned.
