Charleston Southern University Position Overview The Director of Annual Giving and Stewardship is responsible for the management of multiple annual giving fundraising programs designed to educate alumni, friends, employees, and current students on the needs of the University and strengthen their connection to Charleston Southern through annual financial support opportunities. The Director of Annual Giving and Stewardship is also responsible for ensuring all donors are acknowledged and appropriately recognized for their support of the University. Key Responsibilities Annual Giving Initiatives (80%)
- Determine annual giving goals with the Associate Vice President for Development and build strategic and tactical plan, including a communications program for achieving annual goals. This strategy will be a comprehensive plan utilizing the resources available.
- Assume primary responsibility for management of the University’s leadership giving society, the Board of Visitors Scholarship Program. Meet regularly with the Vice President for Development and the front-line development officers to maximize leadership gifts from annual, major, and planned giving donors and ensure close coordination of solicitations, and stewardship activities and mailings.
- Organize, manage and execute the current and all future annual giving initiatives.
Included but not limited to:
Alumni Phonathon, the Buy-a-Brick Program (including the Senior Brick Program), fundraising events, giving days, faculty/staff appeals, and all year end annual appeals. o Serve as the lead project manager for the University’s annual Day of Giving and #GivingTuesday. This includes creating and managing the communications calendar, collaborating with Alumni Engagement on featured engagement and volunteer opportunities, partnering with Marketing and Communications on theme, website, and print and digital collateral, and managing the staffing plan for the event.
o Organize, manage, and execute the annual Alumni Phonathon fundraising drive. Recruit and train effective student callers, and develop segmentation of the Alumni database that maximizes the talents of the student callers. Prepare all mailings, communications, forms, and scripts relating to Phonathon, and work with Director of Operations to ensure database integrity. Work with Database Coordinator to ensure accuracy of pledges entered into the system. Responsible for the fulfillment of pledges made during Phonathon. o Organize, promote, execute, and maintain the Buy-a-Brick program for CSU. Market the Brick program to all alumni, friends, and supporters of CSU. Develop, execute and maintain a Senior Class giving program utilizing the Buy-a-Brick opportunity. Communicate with vendor to get all bricks ordered and in place. o Organize, manage, and execute a successful fundraising events (ie: President’s Cup Golf Tournament, Fun Shoot, etc) while maximizing revenue for student scholarships. Develop mailings and solicit sponsors and teams for the event. Coordinate with other departments on campus to ensure a smooth event with ample coverage for event functions.
- Work effectively with all development officers to gain strong participation in annual giving and build strategies for moving donors to higher giving levels. Ongoing responsibility to identify prospects and transition to appropriate front-line development officer.
- Completes annual face-to-face visits with donor prospects (number to be determined annually).
- Any other fundraising initiatives as assigned. Stewardship Initiatives (10%)
- Assist the Associate Vice President for Development in executing a comprehensive stewardship program for all constituencies and all giving levels is in place and operational
- Contact donors, as appropriate and according to development office protocol, to acknowledge their gifts and strengthen relationships with the University
- Create content for gift acknowledgments, stewardship letters, and pledge statements
- Assist with donor-centered events that are designed to attract and steward donors
- Key point of contact for major Development Office stewardship events including Scholarship Luncheon, President’s Club Dinner, etc.
General Office Responsibilities (5%): - Assist in the planning and execution of all Development Office events
- Complete general office responsibilities such as monthly P-Card close out, travel and assisting with all office mailouts.
- Any other responsibilities designated to the Director of Annual Giving and Stewardship as assigned.
Required Skills and Attributes Bachelor’s degree. Two to five years’ experience in development or a related field. Familiarity with non-profit fundraising/marketing techniques. Excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively across a broad spectrum of the University. Proficiency with PC word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. Preferred Attributes Advanced degree in a relevant field. Previous experience in higher education fundraising.
