Alumni Relations Job Description Position Summary:

The Special Projects Advisor is responsible for developing and implementing strategies special projects out of the Division of Administration and Development and Alumni Relations. This position serves as a liaison between Vanderbilt University and the community, fostering partnerships and collaboration to further Vanderbilt’s mission and objectives. This position will work in a highly collaborative fashion with institutional leaders to identify and execute strategies and the development and execution of specific institutional objectives. The Special Projects Advisor will work with both internal and external partners to successfully meet project milestones and goals set by the Vice Chancellors. This position will report to the Vice Chancellor of Administration.

Key Functions and Expected Performance:
  • Provide strategic guidance to the Executive Director and staff of Dialogue Vanderbilt on the development, execution, and follow up related to the Open Dialogue High School Summit, to be hosted on the Vanderbilt campus in September.
  • Serve as a liaison to high school leaders and educators regarding Vanderbilt’s efforts to foster cultures of civil discourse, open inquiry, and constructive dialogue in school communities.
  • Partner as appropriate to design and curate educational resources and training materials on civil discourse and open dialogue for use by high school administrators and educators.
  • Partner with the Vice Chancellor of Development and Alumni Relations to advance key relationships in the Nashville community.
  • Closely collaborate with Development and Alumni Relations Parent Programs to enhance yield initiatives in targeted markets.
  • Lead other projects as directed by the VC of Administration and/or the VC of Development and Alumni Relations.
Job Classification:

This is a Term Position, meaning the position is expected to last more than six months but less than a year. This is an exempt level, benefits eligible position.

Supervisory Relationships:

This position has no direct supervisor responsibilities. This position reports administratively and functionally to the Vice Chancellor of Administration but will partner closely with other Vice Chancellors, including the Vice Chancellor of Development and Alumni Relations.

Work Environment:

This position will be in the Nashville, TN area. This role will be hybrid, with an expectation that the position will be in the office based on business needs.

Education and Certifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and ability to carry out the essential functions of the job are required.
Experience and Skills:

The Special Projects Advisor must be a professional and polished professional who understands and is able to articulate the nature and importance of a major research university.

Leading candidates should have:
  • 10+ years’ experience working with independent private schools.
  • Expertise working with high-level professionals.
  • Excellent organizational skills, oral and written communications skills and the ability to articulate the needs, interests and accomplishments of Vanderbilt University to a wide range of audiences.
  • Interpersonal skills and judgment suitable for exercising appropriate discretion and demeanor when dealing with alumni, parents, friends, employees, and other constituents in the Nashville community.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, manage multiple projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, and adapt to ever-changing priorities.
  • Exhibit personal characteristics enabling effective interaction with important constituencies and possess a genuine commitment to the advancement of education, research, and to the principles governing Vanderbilt University.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in the handling of confidential information.
  • Good written and oral communication skills, specifically in the areas of proposal and presentation development.
  • Demonstrated success in working across teams and disciplines

  • The capacity to perform in an intellectually rigorous and complex academic environment.
  • Proficient in Windows, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
