Job Purpose The Assistant Director for New Student and Family Programs is responsible for leading the university’s parent and family programming efforts, including signature events such as Family Weekend and Spring Family Day. This role develops and executes strategies to enhance parent and family engagement. The Assistant Director also supports the coordination and execution of new student orientation, transition, and first-year experience programs. Additionally, the position supervises office operations and student employees, manages program budgets, and fosters collaboration across campus and community partners. Reporting to the Director for New Student and Family Programs, this role plays a vital part in shaping a supportive and engaging experience for Tennessee Tech University students and their families. Essential Functions Lead the vision, planning, and execution of the university’s parent and family programming initiatives, such as Family Weekend, Spring Family Day, and other parent and family engagement opportunities. Develop strategies for increasing parent and family engagement, monitor and assess programs for improvement, and incorporate best practices within parent and family programs. Manage the operations of the Tennessee Tech University Parent Association (TTUPA), including its Board of Trustees, membership, scholarship initiatives, on and off-campus outreach events, and member communication plans. Support the coordination and execution of the university’s new student orientation, transition, and first-year programs (Freshman SOAR, Transfer Orientation, International Orientation, University Convocation, Week of Welcome, and National Transfer Student Week). Includes coordinating the recruitment, selection, and training of the Student Orientation Assistant team. Supervise office operations, including management of program budgets and processing of department purchase orders, vendor contracts, and deposits. Responsible for oversight of student workers including maintaining student employment records and process student payroll/timesheets. Collaborate with academic departments, student affairs units, and other campus units, as well as external community partners, to help execute programs. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director or Executive Director for Student Success. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a related field. Four years of relevant professional experience in program management, event planning, or a related field. Excellent problem solving and decision-making abilities. Ability to effectively collaborate and maintain relationships with both on-campus and external community partners. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team setting. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, parents, vendors, and community partners. Strong verbal and presentation skills. Strong copywriting, editing, and proofreading skills and attention to detail. Exceptional organizational and project management skills. Highly proficient in standard office applications/software and demonstrate ability to utilize computer applications, manage spreadsheets and documents, and create reports. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree from an accredited institution within Student Affairs, College Student Personnel, Student Affairs, Counseling, Leadership, or a related field. Experience in college student orientation, transition, and retention programs, parent and family programs, or a related field in higher education. Knowledge of best practices within parent and family programs and new student orientation and transition programs. Demonstrated knowledge of student development theory and how to apply that information into creating effective programs. Ability to analyze current data and trends and recognize problems in order to make appropriate changes and recommendations. Experience training and supervising student employees. Experience with email marketing and communication tools (e.g., Constant Contact, MyEmma, MailChimp). Work Hours Typical work hours are 8:00am – 4:30pm Monday – Friday. May occasionally work nights and weekends depending on programs and events.
Compensation and Benefits Salary Commensurate with education and experience. Pay grade 9.
