Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty AffairsEast TennesseeState University (ETSU) invites applications and nominations forthe position of Associate Dean of Academic and Faculty Affairs inthe College of Health Sciences (CHS). This senior leadership roleis integral to fostering an intellectually rigorous, inclusive, andethically grounded academic community.

The Associate Dean will be adistinguished educator and leader responsible for advancingacademic programs and strategic initiatives within the College,with a strong emphasis on innovation and academic excellence.

Reporting directly to the Dean, this individual will provideacademic and administrative leadership in the development,implementation, and evaluation of academic programs and facultyaffairs.

The Associate Dean will work collaboratively with the Dean,Assistant Deans, School Directors, Department Chairs, ProgramDirectors, and Clinic Directors to oversee more than 20undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as multiple clinicalservices.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Serve as the full partner with the Dean in the strategicdirection and operation of CHS. Collaborate with the Dean, Assistant Deans, School Directors,and Department Chairs to establish, monitor, and report on thedevelopment and progress of the strategic plan for thecollege. Provide oversight and direction to the Assistant Dean forStudent Affairs. Provide leadership and oversight for academic program review,curriculum development, and the modernization of degreeofferings. Build partnerships both within and outside the University tohelp nurture existing academic programs and create new academicofferings, including inter-professional and cross-disciplinaryprograms, that are career-relevant and nationally competitive. Provide leadership and strategic direction, in partnership withthe Director of Research Affairs, for advancing the college’sresearch portfolio. Represent CHS in university committees related to curriculumapprovals, degree proposals, and academic changes. Coordinate and facilitate revisions to policies related toworkload, tenure, and promotion. Lead efforts to develop and implement inclusive facultymentoring policies and procedures. Work with chairs and faculty to administer faculty affairs in amanner that supports our faculty and increases the value of oureducational experience to our students and stakeholders. Lead efforts to achieve and maintain continuous accreditationfor academic programs, including preparation of renewalapplications and correspondence with accrediting bodies. Ensure program quality and support the development of newinitiatives in collaboration with chairs and programdirectors. Serve as the Dean’s proxy in College and University matters,including leadership meetings, faculty evaluation and reporting,grade appeals, academic misconduct cases, and studentcomplaints. Provide oversight of CHS committees related to the role. Work with chairs and program directors to ensure the sufficientand effective use of instructional talent and provide college-leveldirection for recruitment, hiring, and retention of faculty. Oversee the assessment of faculty activities to ensurecompliance with institutional guidelines. Engage in scholarly activity that is appropriate for thediscipline. Support faculty in creating personal growth and developmentplans. Lead and coordinate special projects as assigned by theDean.

Supervision Received:

Reports directly to the Dean, CHS.

Supervision Provided:

Direct reports: Assistant Dean for Student Affairs; Coordinatorfor Cultural Enrichment and Belonging.

Dual reports:

Shared oversight of the School Directors,Assistant Dean for Fiscal Affairs and Strategy, and Director forResearch Affairs.

The Associate Dean for Academic and FacultyAffairs will become an integral member of a diverse, progressiveleadership team focused on regional health improvement through theunified branding of ETSU Health.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Leadership skills to support health sciences education andpromote excellence in teaching, research, service, and clinicalactivities. Strong commitment to quality academic programming, studentsuccess, faculty development, and overall institutionalachievement. Effective communication skills for engaging with faculty,staff, students, and university partners. Comprehensive knowledge of academic policies, curriculumdevelopment, and accreditation standards. Experience with policies and procedures for operatingexternally accredited programs.

Required Qualifications:

Earned terminal degree in the appropriate discipline within thecollege. A minimum of five years of administrative experience at thedepartment chair, or equivalent level in higher education. Teaching, service, and scholarly achievements appropriate forappointment as a tenured associate or full professor within anacademic department in the College. Demonstrated experience advancing student success at theundergraduate, master, and doctoral levels. Demonstrated experience in faculty development and mentorshipfor teaching, research, and service.

Preferred Qualifications:

Meaningful leadership and administrative experience (8+ years)in higher education at the department chair level or higher. Demonstrated evidence of effective academic programadministration of accredited programs represented in theCollege.
