Job Summary The fundamental role of the position is to facilitate and ensure that the residential experience engages students and fosters an atmosphere conducive to the personal development and growth of residents and staff. Individuals in this position work together with the Department of Housing and Residence Life in establishing and supporting Departmental academic initiatives, living-learning communities, and the residential curriculum. RDs also provide support for Student Life & Enrollment and University initiatives. The Resident Director- Temporary position is a live-in position; staff is expected to reside and be visible in their assigned facility while employed and to maintain a presence in their assigned housing overnight during the week and weekends. Staff working in this position are responsible for the following areas: Student engagement, including building a community that supports students in developing a sense of belonging, critical thinking skills, and personal responsibility;
Advising the community council, a registered student organization;
Staff supervision and training, including mentoring and coaching students;
Administrative and management functions, including work related to hall staff, safety and security, crisis intervention, and facilities;
Campus support, including participation in on-call coverage;

Required Qualifications Ability to be flexible, work as a team, organize tasks, prioritize duties, and effectively complete the various components of the RD position, including the following physical requirements:
Visually assess the community, surroundings, and situations that occur spontaneously and respond appropriately;
Verbally communicate with staff, residents, and supervisors in casual and crisis interactions;
Use and operate key/access cards, elevators, duty phones, and computer systems;
Access and respond to situations where they occur (i.e., inside student rooms, bathrooms, hallways, stairwells, elevators, and building lobbies). In accordance with Tennessee state law, all residence hall and apartment staff must successfully pass a national and local criminal background check and have fingerprints on file with ETSU Public Safety.
