Challenging inquisitive minds to think critically and creatively in pursuit of the highest academic standards across all disciplines. Engaging the mind and stirring the soul to connect with the Jewish past and the Jewish present, the Jewish People and the Jewish State, through the broad and embracing lens of Modern Orthodoxy. JLA is currently in its first year at our brand new state-of-the art campus in the Pinewood neighborhood of Miami. We currently have students enrolled in the 6th, 7th, 9th, and 10th grades and will accept students in 8th and 11th as well for the 2024-2025 school year. HISTORY DEPARTMENT
____________________________________________________ The History Department at JLA will provide students with a strong foundation in the essential subject matter of Ancient, American, and World History. Additionally, students will have exposure to civics and economics in both the middle and upper schools. Students will eventually have the opportunity to take electives in the social sciences that include History of the Middle East, Modern Jewish History, History of the Americas, Psychology, Economics, Sociology, and Human Geography. The focus of the history courses will be to foster critical thinking and depth over breadth. The priority is for students to make connections between countries, cultures, conflicts, and the world today, rather than memorize content. Ideally, social science classes should illuminate the connection between history and the issues of our contemporary society and should hopefully inspire students to get civically involved in their communities. All classes will be held at an honors level with an option to pursue the same subject at an advanced level. Pedagogical approaches will include Harkness discussions and project-based learning in addition to both traditional and authentic assessments. Evidence-based writing will be a key component of history instruction. For 2024-2025, we are seeking candidates who have a background and interest in teaching Civics and Economics, both at the middle and upper school levels.
