Durham Technical Community College is hiring a Philosophy instructor in the Humanities and Fine Arts Department. The instructor of Philosophy is primarily responsible for the planning, delivery and evaluation of classroom instruction and for providing related services required for optimal student learning and effective educational programming. As a member of the Humanities and Fine Arts faculty, the instructor is also accountable for assisting and supporting the discipline chair, and/or department deans, as needed, in meeting the instructional and curricular requirements of the program, department, and division. More specifically, and consistent with the employee’s current contract of appointment, the instructor is responsible for the following duties and responsibilities: Examples of Duties Teach all courses, as assigned, for the full duration of scheduled instruction, including seated, online, hybrid, and/or academic success courses as needed at any of Durham Tech’s instructional sites Be fully prepared with a syllabus and instructional plans for each class session in accord with the stated objectives of the course Enforce academic policy and procedures at all times, and comply with institutional rules and regulations pertinent to classroom instruction and general employment; Maintain posted office and on-campus hours sufficient to fulfill all contracted duties and individual professional obligations, as well as to meet the needs of the department, division, and college Being available out of class to students requiring additional assistance; Serve as educational advisor to students and participating in semester advising and registration activities for both assigned advisees and as needed by individual students Assisting the discipline chair in the identification, preview and acquisition of needed educational resources, including textbook selection, library materials, laboratory supplies and other instructional provisions; Participate in discipline, departmental, divisional, and institutional meetings, committees, and other special appointments Assist in the revision and development of course outlines, syllabi, curriculum plans, and other instructional documentation and in the identification, development, preview, and acquisition of educational resources and supplies required to meet program objectives and improve instruction Maintain complete course and student records, reports, and forms in a timely, efficient manner; Fulfilling committee assignments and other special appointments within the educational community as well as the community-at-large, and otherwise giving appropriate support to institutional endeavors when appropriate; Maintaining proper communication and supportive relations at all times with all other units and branches of the division and the college, providing assistance to them in carrying out their respective functions; Attend training and other professional development opportunities on- or off-campus and stay current with developments in the field of instruction Assume other necessary responsibilities and perform additional tasks as assigned by the chair, department dean, chief instructional officer, or president, in meeting the needs of the department, division, and college Minimum Qualifications A master’s degree in Philosophy or a related field with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Philosophy.
Work Experience:
Two years of successful Philosophy instruction at the postsecondary level. Supplemental Information Thorough understanding of and commitment to the mission and philosophy of the North Carolina Community College System Demonstrated ability to use modern instructional technology (Microsoft Office, learning management systems, e-mail, Internet, student information databases, library research databases) and experience with Internet-based instruction Competence in oral and written communication skills necessary for effective teaching Ability to be organized, accurate, and punctual with paperwork and assigned tasks Sensitivity to the needs and expectations of students, colleagues, and community groups Ability to establish and maintain effective, civil, and respectful communication and interpersonal relations throughout the college and the community Personal integrity, honesty, and the ability to maintain confidentiality

Normal Working Hours:
