Our teachers become experts in their course content andhave a keen sense of how to motivate and inspire high schoolstudents. History classes aim to empower students’ voices anddevelop them into global citizens by emphasizing textual analysis,analytical writing, and discourse. At the conclusion of highschool, students are prepared for academic autonomy and collegepreparatory work. Responsibilities 1. Instruction You’ll teach acurriculum that prioritizes analysis of World, US History, AmericanGovernment, and Economics in preparation for Advanced Placement(AP) and collegiate level coursework. You’ll facilitate student-leddiscourse of historical topics, where students grapple withopen-ended guiding questions, engage in peer to peer debate, andsynthesize arguments. You’ll guide students to understand theauthor’s claim and the power of sourcing while developing theskills of argumentation, corroboration, inquiry, and historiographythrough primary and secondary source analysis. You’ll build aninclusive and safe environment where students are empowered to usetheir voices to express evidence-based opinions and perspectives.

You’ll work with the History department to determine academic andengagement goals for students. 2. Data Analysis You’ll meet weeklywith your principal and/or instructional coach to analyze andrespond to trends in student work samples and assessments. You’lllearn and implement strategies to differentiate instruction for alllearners in your classroom. 3. School Culture You’ll build positiverelationships with students to ensure they feel seen, loved, andheard. You’ll partner with students’ families to ensure appropriateresources are available to support their child’s learning needs.

You’ll engage in practice-based professional development,mentorship, and coaching sessions. You’ll participate in weekly,school-wide meetings to cultivate community, model our core values,and encourage student achievement. You’ll partner with your gradelevel team to develop academic goals and practice instructionalstrategies. Qualifications A demonstrated commitment to supportingstudents’ social emotional and academic development An enthusiasmfor collaborating with internal and external partners in the bestinterest of students A self-directed learner who solicits andimplements feedback to improve outcomes and achieve objectives

Required Experience:

A demonstrated interest in impacting K-12students in urban schools and communities (1-2 years experiencepreferred). Academic expertise in Education, History, Geography,Political Science, Criminal Justice, Social Sciences, or theHumanities. Prior to the start of employment, you must have abachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Certification is not required to be hired at Uncommon, but you doneed to meet NY state certification eligibility requirements. Tomeet these requirements, you must enroll in a teacher preparationprogram and maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher during your employmentwith us if you do not have a degree in education. Uncommon Schoolsteachers are required to become certified in the state of New Yorkwithin a reasonable period after beginning employment. AdditionalInformation Our people are what make us Uncommon. Our compensation philosophy values equity & fairness andattracting & retaining top talent. Compensation Compensation forthis role is between $50,000 to $64,700. Starting pay is determinedusing various factors including but not limited to relevantfull-time teaching experience, education certifications, and tenurewith Uncommon Schools. Candidates without full-time Teachingexperience will likely have a starting salary of $50,000.
