Our mission is to deliver an equitable educational experience for scholars. Through experiential learning, restorative practices, and personal development, scholars are prepared to compete academically, contribute socially, and choose their pathways to college and career. Intellectus Prep seeks to provide another high-quality educational option where there are not enough. Our overarching structure is an Entrepreneurship in STEAM (STEEAM) integrated curriculum. We guide our students towards an understanding of entrepreneurship. With our integrated STEAM curriculum, we build on students’ knowledge and hook their curiosity by utilizing experiential learning to provide students with opportunities for engagement in inquiry and reflection when learning new concepts. Through counseling for all, we affirm student identities by embedding into our programming continual self-reflection and self-monitoring with the assistance of a mental health professional who is dedicated to student personal growth. We intentionally tackle the opportunity gap, by investing time for scholars to engage with businesses and fields through apprenticeships and community work. We explicitly teach money management, personal finance and wealth through our financial literacy coursework, empowering scholars and their families with the tools necessary to devise the financial plans that match their goals and aspirations. Our utilization of adaptive structures to deliver a truly differentiated learning experience for scholars with regard to both academics and social-emotional learning, allow for us to ensure that all scholars, including our most vulnerable populations, are engrossed in a learning experience which meets their needs. Intellectus Prep consistently challenges racism, oppressive practices, and all forms of prejudice that plague our community. Job Description The Intellectus Prep High School History Teacher will be a creative practitioner with a long-term vision and a desire to prepare our scholars with the social awareness, and intellectual capacity to be active in the forward development of their communities. This educator will support scholars in obtaining a high school diploma and an associate’s degree through dual credit courses. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to: Curriculum and Planning Teach scholars US History and World History course across grades 8-10 these courses alternate by week and two to three classes are taught per day Connect US History and World History to scholars’ lives and other courses of study Encourage scholars to ask questions, analyze and argue and use concepts and tools to make conjectures and apply that knowledge to today’s world Create deliberately student-centered and engaging lessons that encourage scholars to be leaders of their learning and to use their knowledge in relevant ways Embed reflection of our core values in each lesson to allow students to make direct correlations Use assessment data to identify gaps in knowledge and understanding, inform individual, small group, and whole-group reteaching, and help scholars create academic goals and set milestones Create a culture of feedback and revision that promotes a growth mindset and a love of learning that leads students to welcome challenges and celebrate growth Work collaboratively with team level colleagues to plan and share ideas and address concerns Communication and Collaboration Maintain a collaborative learning environment that cultivates leadership and pride in/accountability to the school community through responsibilities within the class/school community Facilitate Morning Meeting to help maintain the school-wide cultural expectations and norms Build healthy, genuine relationships with scholars that enhance their school experience Actively reinforcing SEL strategies to help students to engage positively within their school community and with peers Competencies To perform the job successfully, competitive applicants should demonstrate the following competencies: Demonstrated belief in scholars and IPCS mission Track record of driving results Perseverance in the face of challenges and adaptability Acute attention to detail coupled with the ability to critically think and act strategically Ability to influence and motivate others in adopting preferred instructional approaches Strong organizational abilities and ability to meet deadlines and to share these skill sets with others Flexible and able to multitask; can work within an ambiguous, fast-moving environment, while also driving toward clarity and solutions Desire to work relentlessly in pursuit of our mission High expectations for students and families in low-income communities Willingness to work autonomously, collaboratively, and/or under the direction of senior staff, as needed Demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities and guiding investment in people and systems A hunger for feedback and self-improvement A high level of ownership over the overall outcomes of the scholars they lead Ability to be a bold, tireless, and engaging change agent and culture creator Self-awareness, demonstrating an accurate idea of one’s own strengths and weaknesses and an ability to treat all members of the school’s community with respect Working knowledge of content and methodology across grade levels Exceptional organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills Maturity, humility, strong work ethic, sense of humor, and a “whatever it takes” disposition Committed to creating an anti-racist institution and challenges white supremacy and oppressive practices

Educational Background and Work Experience:

NYS Social Studies Teacher Certification (7-12) Required Bachelor’s Degree Required Masters Degree in History or 15 graduate credits in History Preferred Undergraduate and Graduate Unofficial Transcripts Familiarity with Regents curriculum and preparation content Experience in education Successful experience working with and/or teaching children in urban middle school grades required Experience with and interest in working with high needs students preferred Demonstrated ability to engage in conversations about anti-racism and culturally responsive practices Please note this position starts with teacher training during the month of August.
