Job Description

Childrens Librarian Position Purpose/Summary Responsible for theprovision of children’s programs and services for the Central Library,including collection development of print and non-print materials,programming, reference services, outreach and similar duties pertainingto children’s services, and assisting in developing and providingsystem-wide children’s services. Work is performed under the directionof the Supervisor of Youth and Outreach Services. Supervision isexercised over other employees. Essential Functions Develops andimplements collection development plans for the Central LibraryChildren’s collection. Selects, purchases, weeds, and maintains thechildren’s collection at the Central Library. Creates and conductsprograms for students, teachers and principals at preschools andelementary schools, acts as liaison with school department on mattersrelated to curriculum, assignments, outreach, etc. Provides resourcesand references for student projects. Conducts school group tours forchildren. Maintains children’s section of Central Library, createssubject bibliographies and assists branch librarians in children’scollections. Coordinates the Early ChildhoodResourceCenter. Purchasesmaterials, prepares for cataloging, maintains web page, sendsnewsletters, offers workshops, attends meetings, and prepares reports.

Keeps abreast of child-related trends/popular reading interests andresponds using a creative, lively approach to reach the childpopulation. Keeps abreast of developments and technological advances inthe library field through conferences, associations, etc. Initiates andengages in special projects that analyze, design and develop specialservices for children’s audiences. Participates individually or in workteams to make recommendations for new initiatives or changes in serviceas they relate to the overall operation of the Library as related tochildren. Performs other related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills,and Abilities Specialized knowledge of children’s reading interests.

Ability to demonstrate vision, strategic thinking, collaboration andinclusive leadership skills, flexibility and adaptability and awillingness to embrace and drive change. Excellent interpersonal andcommunication skills. Strong organizational and writing skills.

Specialized knowledge of classification systems. Education andExperience Bachelor’s degree and completion of an American LibraryAssociation accredited Master of Library Science. Some libraryexperience preferred but not required.
