Non-Exempt Job Purpose:

The Mercy Archives and Records team preserves and promotes the rich history of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas through professional archival, library, and records management practices. We are seeking a dedicated part-time Librarian to manage our library collections at the Mercy Heritage Center in Belmont, North Carolina, the centralized cultural heritage repository for the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. This role will support the department’s reference and research services through the maintenance and accessibility of library materials.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Maintain and augment the library catalog system (OPALS) to ensure efficient reference and research services. Oversee library spaces within Mercy Heritage Center, including the preservation area, research space, and storage areas. Assist in supervising and training staff, volunteers, and interns working on library projects. Perform original and copy cataloging of print and electronic materials to enhance accessibility. Collect and maintain statistical data related to library operations and services. Recommend the selection, evaluation, and weeding of materials in various collections. Contribute to special projects promoting the library and other cultural heritage resources. Support Mercy Archives’ mission through active participation in department activities and promoting multiculturalism and international history. Maintain confidentiality and discretion in handling patron requests and sensitive materials. Adhere to Mercy Archives’ policies, procedures, and core values. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Required:

Master’s degree in Library Science from an accredited ALA program. Experience with cataloging processes and best practices. Ability to handle and transport materials weighing up to 25 pounds. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and scanning software. Professional attitude and strong customer service orientation. Excellent oral, interpersonal, and written communication skills. Ability to engage with diverse audiences.

Preferred:

Knowledge and appreciation of the traditions and culture associated with the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas and religious life. Background in women’s history and religious history, both in the U.S. and internationally. Bilingual in English and Spanish (communication and comprehension skills). Why Work for Us?
