Primary Purpose of Position:

The State Library is seeking a dedicated and forward-thinking Youth Services Consultant to join our team! The Youth Services Consultant will be responsible for providing leadership, expertise, training, consulting services and resources to North Carolina Libraries in support of youth services and youth programming. Position will work closely with staff throughout the State Library of North Carolina, other DNCR Divisions, academic libraries, and other government agencies and organizations on common projects and initiatives. This position has the option to work in the Raleigh, NC office or the Buncombe County Western office. Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Develops, coordinates, and manages statewide initiatives, programs, projects, and grants related to youth services. This includes but is not limited to projects promoting early literacy, summer learning programs, intergenerational programs (in collaboration with the Adult Services & Digital Literacy Consultant), and other activities that support the development of youth ages birth-18. Provides consulting services to NC library staff on programs, services and resources focused on children and young adults. Supports public libraries’ development of their summer reading programs. Develops both short-term and long-term approaches for statewide youth services programming; identifies tools and technologies that will improve service to NC library youth communities; establishes standards for providing youth services programming and services. Promotes and supports excellent library service through virtual and in-person outreach to libraries, representing the State Library throughout the state and at statewide and national meetings, conferences, and committees. Provides guidance to NC library staff on developing project concepts and preparing LSTA grant applications.

Position/Physical Requirements:

Typical work schedule: Monday through Friday; 40 hours. Occasional travel required. Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally with or without reasonable accommodation.

Demonstrated strong interest in and commitment to public service and working with youth. Eligible for North Carolina Public Librarian Certification.
