Permanent Substitute Intermediate School Library – Media Specialist

REPORTS TO

Intermediate School Principal and Assistant Principal

QUALIFICATIONS

Valid Pennsylvania certificate – Library Science PK-12 required 3.0 or higher QPA Proof of ongoing professional or educational experience Outstanding verbal and written communication skills Extensive educational knowledge as related to the elementary-aged child Computer literacy Experience using an electronic library management system preferred Master of Library Science degree or Master of Library Information Science degree preferred

JOB GOALS

The school library media specialist’s function in the school is to provide leadership and expertise in the effective use of information and instructional technology in order to meet the established academic standards. The school library media specialist will foster a love of reading and support academic success by guiding students in selecting books that align with their individual reading levels, educational needs, and personal interests. The school library media specialist will exert strong curricular and instructional leadership in which information literacy and the use of technology are common threads across all subjects and grade levels. The school library media specialist will collaborate with other school professionals to integrate information literacy skills with instructional activities. The school library media specialist will teach all students in grades three through five the board approved curriculum for Library, one of the students’ rotational special area classes.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

:

INSTRUCTION

Plans objectives and instruction for students in grades three through five Facilitate library media use outside of the Library classroom Assesses student achievement. Provides instruction to meet information literacy standards. Plans formal and informal reading, viewing, and listening activities. Provides personalized instruction to students and staff. Provides information and experiences that support learner-initiated activities. Encourages use of critical thinking skills by students. Promotes the use of global resources. Ensures that all students receive literacy skills instruction.

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT

Works with the Assistant Superintendent for curriculum instruction and assessments to develop benchmarks for information literacy standards. Links information literacy standards to established academic standards. Facilitates the integration of information literacy skills. Serves on building and/or district curriculum teams as appropriate. Actively participates in the development and assessment of the school’s curriculum as it relates to library media services.

INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

Selects, collects, organizes, stores and disseminates information in various formats. Organizes and facilitates a physical environment designed to meet the needs of all learners. Facilitate intellectual access to traditional and electronic resources including resources on the internet. Creates and fosters a climate that motivates effective use of information. Promotes library information services and resources. Maintains current and in-depth knowledge of the best practices related to information management. Uses inter-library loan and resources sharing to enhance the learner’s access to information. Maintains an accurate electronic or manual catalog of resources employing cataloging standards.

INSTRUCTION COLLABORATION

Actively partners in planning authentic interdisciplinary learning activities. Collaborates with teachers in selecting appropriate information resources to meet instructional goals, various learning styles, and special needs of students. Collaborates with teachers in accessing and evaluating integrated instructional activity. Facilitates an open collection time before the start of the school day for all students and staff in the building.

PROGRAM ADMINISTRATION

Works collaboratively to define and recommend the policies of the school librarian information program. Meets and confers with other school library media specialists in the district. Creates and maintains library policies and procedures. Prepares, justifies, and communicates budgetary needs. Develops a collection development plan which includes selecting and acquiring resources, maintaining a current inventory, weeding materials, and accessing and evaluating the collection. Performs ongoing assessment of the school library information program. Directs, monitors, and supervises support staff. Implements district policies and procedures.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Collaborates with information technology personnel, teachers, and administrators, in identifying needs and integrating technology into the educational and informational process. Collaborates with all staff to identify the full range of current technologies and software required to meet learner’s information needs. Serves as a primary leader in the school’s use of instructional and information technologies to enhance learning. Instructs students and staff to use library media technologies to address their information needs. Uses technology for library program administration. Is knowledgeable about information resources accessed via the internet. Serves on building and district technology committees.

FAIR USE AND INTELLECTUAL

Creates and disseminates district policies related to freedom of information that are consistent with the mission goals and objectives of the school district. Provides services and resources that can create and sustain an atmosphere of open inquiry. Serves as an active advocate for intellectual freedom within the school and in the larger community. Models ethical and responsible use of information and information technology by observing all legal guidelines related to access and duplication and ensuring the confidentiality and security of information. Maintains an understanding of current legislation and regulations regarding access, copyright, and other legal issues. Collaborates with staff and administrators to develop and publicize policies and procedures that advocate compliance with copyright and other relevant laws.

EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP ROLE

Works as an instructional leader with the school’s leadership team members. Leads in educational reform by showing connections between information based learning and the skills that students need. Serves as a leader in staff development activities related to library media services. Takes a proactive role in promoting the use of technology by staff and works collaboratively with all technology staff members. Models and promotes life-long learning. Shows effective leadership strategies.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

: Terms of employment are in accordance with the agreement between the South Fayette Township Board of Education and the South Fayette Education Association. This Permanent Substitute position is anticipated to be needed for the start of the 2025-2026 school year and last until the end of December 2025.

EVALUATION

Performance of this job will be evaluated by the Building Principal and communicated to the Superintendent for review.
