We have a great career opportunity available for a Public Services Librarian at our Columbia, South Carolina headquarters. Under the general supervision of the Library Services Director, provide services in areas of reference, research, online resources, government documents, and circulation to library’s patrons; provide daily Reference Desk coverage; participate in library programming, including events, outreach and workshops; develop resource guides; and participate in collection development.
Responsibilities:
Provide patron services in person, by phone, mail, email and online chat. Provide desk coverage and on call services. Communicate information about library programs, collections, services, resources, procedures, and policies to library patrons. Perform reference, collection development, administration, and circulation duties with SC related collections, state documents, federal documents, and electronic resources. Assist with promoting library initiatives, planning and development. Organize and implement library programs, events, outreach and workshops. Serve as library liaison to state agencies through outreach, orientations, and correspondence. Provide information to SC citizens regarding library’s collections, resources, and services to best promote the SC State Library. Represent the State Library and participate on committees, in professional organizations, and at conferences. Perform other duties as assigned. The primary roles of the Public Services Librarian are providing excellent customer service to patrons in person, by phone, mail, email and online chat; staff the Reference Desk daily; perform reference, collection development, administrative and circulation duties; assist with library programs, events, outreach and workshops; effectively communicate information about library materials, services, programming and resources; and represent the library on committees, in professional organizations and at conferences. This position requires regular interaction with patrons of diverse backgrounds, outstanding communication skills, and comfort with serving as the main contact for library patrons. Minimum and Additional Requirements A master’s degree from a library school accredited by the American Library Association Preferred Qualifications One (1) year of experience providing library public services. A working knowledge of computer applications for library services. Ability to provide professional library services to people from all walks of life in a consistently positive manner. Ability to effectively represent the library and build strong public relations with the community, libraries, state agencies and legislative members. Excellent interpersonal, customer service, organizational, oral, written and communication skills. Additional Comments Work takes place in an office environment. Overnight travel is not expected for this position, however may be occasionally necessary. Some local travel is expected. Occasional work on evenings and weekends.
