Job Description

Youth Services Specialist-Library-Part Time 4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars Maryville, TN 37804 Under the supervision of the Youth Services Manager, the Part-Time Youth Services Specialist provides high quality, professional face-to-face customer service that enables the public to access the full range of the services provided by the Youth Services Department. This is a part-time position at 29 hours weekly. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Assist patrons with any and all questions and/or finding materials, using tools like the library catalog, databases and online resources; Assist patrons with checking out materials using the self-checkout machine; Aid the early learners literacy program by planning and implementing storytimes for all ages, preparing crafts and activities, and other related tasks; Participate in outreach events such as visiting preschools and daycares, school events, or community events; Coordinate with PR to create supplementary materials (fliers, brochures, social media posts, press releases, etc.); Develop lesson plans for programs including but not limited to STEAM topics, LEGO building, arts and crafts, book clubs, etc., for kids and teens from 0 months – 18 years; Implement and teach lesson plans for the aforementioned programs; Assist with planning large events such as our Summer Reading Program or Fall Festival ; Supervise the Teen Room during after school hours or programming; Maintain library collection via organizing and shelving books, checking books in and out, and weeding shelves; Answer phones and relays messages; Compile data related to programming; Assist in other library departments when necessary; Assist patrons with the use of library computers, including troubleshooting; Teach patrons effective ways to use the internet, especially for research; Tidies areas; and Performs other assigned duties. It is mandatory for Part-Time Youth Services Specialists to: Possess proficient knowledge of library organization, resources, and systems; Gain and implement departmental practices and systems; Speak and write using current rules of grammar, composition, and punctuation; Skillfully use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems, and computers for word processing, data entry, and accounting purposes; Organize and communicate effectively; Propensity to work in a dynamic environment that requires adaptation to changing goals, priorities, and needs; Continuously maintain tactful and professional conversations with others; including, while being confronted with controversial situations; and Bolster and sustain a positive, professional demeanor with citizens, colleagues, elected officials, judges, lawyers, attorneys, paralegals, and other agencies.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK

Bachelor’s degree; One (1) year of experience; Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience; and Valid driver’s license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, reach and manipulate objects, tools and/or controls. The position requires mobility. Duties may involve moving materials weighing up to 10 pounds on a regular basis. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while operating equipment, such as computer keyboard, mouse, calculator and similar machines. The position requires hearing, mental acuity, speaking, and visual acuity.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Most work is performed in a well-lighted, modern public library setting with centrally controlled heating and air conditioning.
