Full Job Description Job Summary:

You and your team create amazing experiences for our library patrons. You foster teamwork and work cooperatively with others to deliver excellent service, resolve problems, and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Customer Experience and Communication Creates a welcoming library environment and ensures positive, memorable experiences for all users. Maintains open internal communication and strong working relationships with colleagues and supervisors on all relevant matters (building, staff, service, security). Staff Support and Development Participates in the training and supervision of new staff and volunteers. Understands and performs duties of lower-level library classifications as needed. Attends workshops, webinars, seminars, and conferences for professional development. Programming and Outreach Under the Library Director’s guidance, supports, plans, promotes, and executes in-house or virtual programs and outreach for children, teens, and families. Plans, organizes, and supervises children’s story times to encourage reading and lifelong library use. Provides library services to elementary schools and the community through initiatives like class visits and summer reading programs. Conducts outreach to community organizations (schools, childcare facilities, businesses) to promote library services and collections. User Assistance and Information Services Provides prompt and courteous assistance to library users in person, at service desks, via phone, virtually, and through electronic options. Offers reference and reader’s advisory services. Educates community members on library resources and technology and assists with basic computer and e-reader questions. Explains and demonstrates how to use library catalogs, print and media collections, databases, and the internet. Collection Management and Promotion Keeps current with new library materials and promotes their use through book talks, displays, reading lists, posters, social media, and other tools. Assists with the processing, maintenance, and arrangement of collections, including shelf-reading, shelving, weeding, and other tasks. Operational Support and Compliance Supports and upholds library policies and the Library Code of Conduct. Supports the daily operations of the youth department and is cross-trained in other areas.

Education and Experience:

College degree in Library Science or a closely related field; MLS or equivalent required. 2+ years of progressively responsible library managerial experience and/or administrative functions of a library, or equivalent knowledge preferred. 2+ years supervisory experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Good organizational, time management and problem-solving skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both professional and nonprofessional, co-workers, management personnel, and the public. Proficiency in MS Office suite including Excel, Word and PowerPoint. Excellent listening, communication, and presentation abilities. Excellent customer service skills. Ability to understand sensitive relationships and underlying politics in client interactions. Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include some weekend and evening work.

Work Environment:

Fast paced public library. Self-starter with ability to work in a self-directed environment with minimal guidance.

Physical Demands:

Ability to move from place to place within the location; lift, push/pull, hold/carry of items weighing up to (25) pounds and occasional up to (35) pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials. Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.
