The Boca Raton Library has four service centers – the Spanish River Library, the Downtown Library, Mobile Library Services, and the Digital Library. Under the direction of a Library Assistant III, Librarian I, or Librarian II, full time Librarian Assistant II and Library Assistant II Lead Worker positions are responsible for general functions of the library, including public assistance with accounts, information, or library materials, adult instruction, youth programs, and collection selection, cataloging, or weeding. Full time Library Assistant II are essential personnel and may have assigned project responsibilities such as scheduling, supplies, statistical or administrative tracking and reporting, temporary supervision of section or ad hoc teams, cross-section work group participation, occasional purchasing, opening and closing buildings, and public safety and emergency response. Essential Functions Account Services Section Accurately performs circulation functions including creating and updating library cards, placing and finding holds, checking materials out or in, collecting fines or fees, and preserving account confidentiality, in person, by email and on the phone. Effectively uses email, phones, computers and printers, library software and calendars, cash registers, credit card machines, calculators, and library self-checks and scanners. Assesses the condition of returned library materials and addresses damage with cardholders according to procedure. Interacts helpfully with patrons to assist them in obtaining a library card, using library materials and services, and addressing any account issues. Works collaboratively or independently on assigned project responsibilities such as scheduling, supplies, statistical or administrative tracking and reporting, open hours signs, or cross-section work group participation. May act as temporary supervisor for part time Library Assistant II, including assisting on hiring panels, providing onboarding, new hire and professional development training, approving system overrides, waiving fines per procedure, reviewing and approving deposits, approving schedule changes, tracking attendance and performance, performing evaluations, and issuing reprimands. When scheduled as Building Administrator in Charge, responsible for opening and closing buildings, public safety, and emergency response during open hours in which a supervisor is not present. Assists with library-wide events, offers reading recommendations, and maintains displays. Enforces the Rules of Conduct, library policies, and maintains order at the libraries. Does related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of:
Significant knowledge of library principles, methods, materials, and practices. Significant knowledge of the objectives of a public library. Some knowledge of reader interests, books, and authors, including how to make read-alike recommendations. Some knowledge of the organization of the library website and calendar. Some knowledge of catalog and database search techniques.
Skilled in:
Reading and alphabetizing accurately to place materials in their proper order. Evaluating tasks and priorities to complete work accurately and efficiently. Advanced skills in customer service. Advanced skills in the use of email, cell phones, computers, software applications such as Outlook, peripheral devices such as printers, and searching in a library catalog, a database, or the Internet. Basic skills in the use of Excel or other spreadsheet software.
Ability to:
Understand how the library is organized, including services, sections, shelves, aisles, and other library spaces. Perform mathematical calculations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, including counting money and tracking number of uses. Accurately sort and file materials alphabetically, numerically, and chronologically. Accurately shelve using the Dewey Decimal System and other organizational methods. Carefully handle library materials, using appropriate tools, containers and book carts. Assist patrons to locate materials and refer patrons to other appropriate assistance in the library. Establish and maintain working relationships with patrons, partners, and co-workers. Serve the public and interact with co-workers with honesty and integrity, addressing difficult situations with professional composure. Understand, adhere to, and effectively communicate policies and procedures including form submittal as well as facilitate and/or demonstrate preferred completion steps when using technology. Speak effectively and in a friendly manner to patrons at the front desk, on the phone, and during card signups, classes, presentations, or library events. Ability to express ideas effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to work mornings, days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events as necessary. Bend, stoop, twist, and reach to shelve or move a variety of library materials. Minimum and Preferred Qualifications Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent (60 college or university credits). Two (2) year experience working with the public or supporting public services. Possession of a valid State of Florida Class “E” driver’s license
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree preferred. Experience working with cash registers, computers, or other technology to assist customers at a front desk preferred. Experience with class, program, or instruction development or presentation, for Instructional, ECE, and Youth preferred. Additional experience is accepted as a minimum requirement in lieu of the postsecondary degree on the following basis: additional four (4) years in lieu of the bachelor’s degree, and additional two (2) years in lieu of an associate degree.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid State of Florida Class “E” driver’s license with no more than six (6) points in a three (3) year period
