POSITION SUMMARY
This position is responsible for the effective operations of the circulation desk, including scheduling and supervising Circulation Library Assistants and Circulation Library Aides, maintaining accurate financial record keeping, and providing excellent customer service to patrons. Guidelines consist of the library branch manual, the county personnel manual, relevant county procedures, and supervisor’s instructions. Guidelines require judgement, selection and interpretation in application. Contacts are typically with people or organizations in the community which utilize services of the library. Contacts are also with fellow employees in the library system. Employee performs tasks while intermittently standing, sitting, or walking. Employee often has to reach, bend, or crouch in order to access materials. Employee must frequently lift light (less than 24 pounds) and must occasionally lift heavy (25-50 pounds) objects. Employee must possess manual dexterity.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
Supervises and schedules work of Circulation Library Assistants and Circulation Library Aides in the Circulation Department at the Columbia County Library – Evans Branch. Participates in employment interviews for Circulation Library Assistants and Circulation Library Aides. Trains all Circulation Department positions in all aspects for their jobs, including PINES automated circulation and on-line catalog system, book shelving and other duties required. Evaluates circulation operating procedures and adjust as needed to improve efficiency. Instructs patrons on borrowing policies and provide general information on library services. Understands and can perform all jobs related to circulation services, including but not limited to charging, discharging, and renewing library materials, registering and re-registering patrons, receiving and processing reserves and system-level hold requests, collecting and recording fines and fees. Provides financial management by organizing and balancing the daily cash flow that ensures smooth and efficient operations of the library. Provides information management by measuring the daily use of the library to ensure the resources provided are relevant to the needs of the patrons. Responsible for the general maintenance and appearance of the Circulation Department which includes verifying that all equipment is working properly. Works with other library departments to ensure smooth coordination of services and initiatives. Performs other duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of library operations, collections, books and literature in general, standard reference sources and library cataloging systems. Knowledge county guidelines relevant to the operation of the library. Knowledge of library policies and procedures with a thorough understanding of library circulation guidelines and policies. Knowledge of library specific software, office applications software and personal computers. Knowledge of bookkeeping and financial principles. Skill in oral and written communication and in public speaking. Skill in supervision and customer service. Skill in repairing books.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE A
Master’s Degree or a Master’s Degree in Library Science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association is required. Knowledge and level of competency are commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work in addition to the basic skills typically associated with a degree from an accredited college or university. Experience in financial practices sufficient to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having a similar position for one to two years. Possession of or the ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license. A combination of education and/or work experience may be substituted for minimum requirements.
