This position will also provide excellent customer service and circulation duties to meet the needs of Library patrons. The mission of the St. Louis County Library is to provide the resources and services to enrich individual minds, enhance lives and expand perspectives. Salary:
$37,429.00
Hours:
40 hours per week.
Monday-Thursday:
10:30 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.; Friday 8:30-5 Hours may shift during summer months. Occasional Saturdays One Sunday per month
Essential Responsibilities:
1. In the course of the work day, develops a rapport with patrons, especially teens, in order to bring about positive behavioral outcomes based on respect. Observes library activity to promote responsible use of the library. a. Serves as a guide and role model for teens during their daily activities at the library. b. Provides structure and guidance for teens using the library. c. Monitors the condition of the teen service areas. d. Assists in promoting library use, especially programs and services for teens. e. Provides Readers’ Advisory and Reference service for youth and their caregivers to assist them in making the best use of the Library Resources 2. Works to ensure a safe and welcoming environment. Educates patrons on the Library’s Code of Conduct and contributes to the resolution of Code of Conduct issues as they arise. a. Provides library patrons with basic information regarding library rules, policies, services, and facilities. b. Records all significant incidents and communicates these incidents to branch management and other appropriate staff. Completes the Library’s Incident Reports when necessary. c. Listens to teens and uses sound judgment to calmly work through patron complaints and disagreements. d. Intervenes in negative exchanges or activities and promotes positive resolutions or provides diversions. 3. Identifies community needs at the branch level and focuses on relationship building and customer service to a diverse group of teens, as well as their caregivers and educators. a. Supports the manager in being a liaison to teen service organizations, schools and educators. b. Maintains awareness of issues impacting teens and their families. c. Develops and maintains knowledge of school and community resources and connects patrons to relevant resources. 4. In cooperation with the Youth Specialist/Youth Librarian, organizes and participates in programming and outreach, with teens as a primary focus, that encourages participation and redirects from unwelcome activities. a. Plans, prepares, schedules, and presents programs and activities for youth in order to support the Library’s mission. Visits schools and other teen services organizations to promote the library. b. Coordinates teen service operations with other library services, departments and functions. 5. Supports all patrons in use of the library. a. Assists patrons with public access computing to ensure they make effective use of technological resources. b. Educates patrons in Library skills to enable them to become confident Library users. c. Performs circulation duties to establish and maintain accurate patron records. d. Respects and maintains confidentiality of patrons and peers.
Job Qualifications:
High School Diploma Must possess a commitment to a high level of public service to Library patrons Must possess excellent communication and organization skills Experience working with teenagers is preferred. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of people in differing circumstances. Ability to use sound judgment to detect unusual, harmful, or emergency situations. Ability to think analytically, resolve problems, make effective decisions, and act with integrity. Ability to diffuse and deescalate situations proactively.

Tuition Reimbursement Physical and Mental Requirements:
Ability to stand for up to 8 hours per shift Ability to bend very low shelves or reach to very high shelves when retrieving library materials Ability to lift a minimum of 25 lbs.
