Return to the Chatham County Homepage. Job Description Are you passionate about libraries and helping others? We’re looking for a Library Assistant to join our welcoming team! This position is not time-limited and offers the opportunity to support daily library operations, assist patrons, and help prepare materials for circulation. You’ll work under the guidance of experienced staff and play an important role in creating a positive experience for our community. Some evening and weekend hours, and occasional travel to other branches may be required—but you’ll be part of a supportive, flexible team that values your contributions. Performs intermediate administrative support work at the circulation desk, preparing materials for circulation, providing assistance to library patrons, and performing related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Library Assistant III or the Library Branch Manager. Some evening and weekend work is required. Some travel to different branches may be required. Some evening and weekend work may be required. Essential Functions Performs circulation duties, checking materials in and out utilizing automated system; shelves and ensures materials are in order, empties outdoor book drop as needed;
Answers telephone, directs callers to the appropriate staff, renews materials, places requested materials on hold and contacts patrons;
Registers new library patrons, updates and corrects patron registration information, and issues new and replacement library cards;
Provides assistance to library patrons relating to library computers and materials; reserves computers for patrons;
Assists with library programming;
Performs reader’s advisory and reference services; assists patrons with locating materials; receives and forwards interlibrary loan requests;
Receives money for copies, overdue materials, lost or damaged books, and replacement of cards; operates cash register with accuracy;
Reports maintenance issues, retrieves copier paper and supplies as needed, sends items for repair;
Assists with opening and closing procedures;
Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED and minimal experience in library work or other work dealing with the public or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Ideal candidate will have general knowledge of library and circulation functions. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities General knowledge of basic library procedures, methods and techniques;
General knowledge of the library circulation functions;
General knowledge of office procedures and records maintenance techniques;
Skill in the use of library equipment, materials, and resources;
Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment;
Ability to operate standard office and computer equipment and perform basic word processing and data entry;
Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public. Physical Requirements
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking, hearing, handling, feeling, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; work requires vocal communication to express or exchange ideas orally; work requires hearing to perceive information at normal spoken levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visually inspecting small defects and/or small parts, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities; work involves possible exposure to dust; work is generally in a quiet location (e.g. library, private offices).
