Union AFSCME Posting Detail Information Job Summary/Basic Function About the position: Resource Sharing provides students and faculty with essential information resources beyond the library’s budget constraints. This service is critical to maintaining high-quality academic coursework, research, and scholarly activities across campus. The Resource Sharing Technician (RST) handles over 15,000 transactions annually and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Resource Sharing area within the Access Services Team. Resource Sharing encompasses electronic document delivery services as well as book lending and borrowing. This involves working with the Millersville University community and with staff from other institutions both nationally and internationally. This position requires the use of a suite of software including an integrated library system (ILS) to provide these services. The RST reports to the Director of Library Operations and works independently with little direct supervision to prioritize work within Resource Sharing including the assignment of tasks to 8-10 student employees. The RST is the lead worker in Resource Sharing and therefore delegates work to the Access Services Library Assistant II who works in Resource Sharing. The RST is expected to provide excellent customer service. Information sharing, collaboration, and regular communication with all access services staff and faculty librarians regarding daily operations and special projects are essential to maintaining the functionality of Resource Sharing services.

Duties and Responsibilities Supervise all resource sharing services including Interlibrary Loan Lending, Interlibrary Loan Borrowing, Non-returnables, Document Delivery, packaging, shipping, and receiving. Process requests as needed. Manage request queues to cancel duplicate requests/requests for owned items to save on copyright and shipping expenditures. Research requests for hard-to-find items. Purchase dissertations in support of graduate student and faculty research. Manage receiving and shipping workflows to maintain or reduce annual shipping costs. Maintain an inventory of shipping and other supplies necessary for the work of the unit and order as necessary. Maintain current shipping records to ensure tracking and delivery of outgoing materials. File claims for lost packages. Maintain address database for lending and borrowing from other libraries. Manage multiple email inboxes used in Resource Sharing. Perform cost analyses and purchase articles or eBooks to fill requests. Evaluate returned items from and assess fines and fees as needed. Invoice other universities for lost and missing items. Pay invoices for purchased documents Communicate with users and other libraries. Purge temporary item records in the ILS. Manage and update the OCLC Policy Directory. Perform advanced problem solving and trouble shooting for technical problems. Delegate to and oversee the work of the Library Assistant II. Train and supervise student assistants. Ensure good customer service. Assist with hiring, scheduling, training, and supervising student employees. Serve as back-up timekeeper for Access Services student employees. Follow library procedures and policies to ensure standards set by policy including monitoring due dates, fines/fees, etc. Maintain positive communication with library users and other institutions. Follow copyright law, track compliance, and submit copyright clearance orders. Document and maintain Resource Sharing workflow and procedures. Compile reports. Assist with other Access Services functions, as necessary. Use various equipment including microfilm scanners. Assess functionality of scanning equipment and request service or recommend replacement. Periodically assist with the circulation desk, course reserves, and stacks maintenance. All other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Four years of library-clerical work including two years of advanced library clerical work comparable to the Library Assistant II, and graduation from high school OR two years of advanced library clerical work, and an associate degree or equivalent training with major course work in library science OR a Bachelor’s degree. Prior experience working with an ILS or systems used to perform Interlibrary Loan functions. Demonstrated problem solving skills. Evidence of ability to train and supervise others. Evidence of ability to be self-directed Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook. Prior experience with Resource Sharing, Circulation, Interlibrary Loan activities. Prior work experience in an academic library. Prior experience working with Alma ILS, ILLiad, ReShare and/or RapidX.
