ROLE & LEVEL/GRADE:
A1 / 1 SUMMARY

Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS), a program created by the U.S. Department of Education, is designed to strengthen the math and science skills of underserved, first-generation high-school students. The goal of the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in math and science. With guidance from the UBMS team, junior mentors will assist with the daily implementation of summer and academic year curriculum. S/he will also assist with organization and distribution of materials for daily program activities. This position is open to UBMS graduates upon completion of high school as part of continued career development support.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist mentors/instructors in delivering summer and academic year curriculum Take initiative to identify and solve problems inside and outside the classroom Serve as a near-peer mentor to program students, as needed in order to support the teacher’s overall teaching goal Assist mentors in identifying the strengths and areas of improvement of each student in the class Assist the project director in organizing dedicated snack and lunch time periods Ensure that all the students are involved in the various activities Maintain adequate communication with UBMS full-time staff Participate in the mandatory daily pre-meeting and classroom setup Participate in the mandatory daily post-meeting Report to work as scheduled

MINIMUM JOB/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Required High School Diploma Successful completion of the UBMS program at Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science Inc.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills Proven organizational and time management skills Ability to maintain a professional personal appearance, attitude and work behavior at all times Ability to work well independently and as part of a team Ability to work well with students with various learning needs Friendly and nurturing disposition

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT

Work is performed primarily in the field. Moderate to active physical effort. Must be able to carry boxes and objects, walk/hike for extended periods of time, swim/snorkel in the ocean and remain energetic for long hours during overnight trips. Exposure to physical risk is primarily that of an outdoor environment, such as sunburn, mosquito bites, etc.

CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS

Level 2 background clearance as defined by the Florida Statutes/law Drug screening as part of the Drug Free Workplace Program.
